Thank you so much in advance. As a family we decided to start going through my 84 year old father's stuff before he meets his maker in the sky, and I ended up with his 1960 Ford f100. He bought it new back in day. The truck has spent its entire life in Phoenix, Az. I drove the **** out of this truck back in high school (86-89). My question. I am in the process of restoring this truck in hopes of getting it in good enough shape to show up at the Austin F100 Nationals in April of 2017. I'm not talking show quality. I'm talking showing up and trying not to be embarr***ed. Anyway, back in 1963-64ish, my father lent the truck to his brother who pulled a trailer with a backhoe on it from Phoenix to Flagstaff, Arizona. Basically, through the mountains and up 8000 feet of elevation. Needless to say, my uncle burned up the 292 motor. My uncle, decided to switch the motor to a 223. I didn't realize it didn't have the original engine until a couple weeks ago. I checked the vin number in the glove box and found out it had a 223 and not 292. I immediately called my father who then told me the story. Anyway, I'm looking at making the truck whole again and throwing in a 292 engine. I took some pictures, and was hoping you guys can let me know if it will be direct swap? My dad can't remember what my uncle had the mechanic do. I'm shocked my 84 year old father remembered that my uncle burned up the engine. His memory isn't what it once was. I'm hoping to fix it up, fly my Dad to Austin from Phoenix, and have him spend some time with his old truck. This time, instead of me sitting in the p***enger's seat with a coke and some peanuts, it will be him. It will be just like we did back in the day before I moved away from Phoenix for college. Again, thank you so much in advance. Just trying to make an old man happy and let him know that the truck means the world to me. My 8 year old wants to go for "rides" just like I used to with Tata (Grandpa). He was in hog heaven when I took him riding around the block in the bed of the truck. Thanks, TexasDude aka AzDude living in Texas.
First, look and see if they cut off the front crossmember frame 292 engine mount as it is not used for 223s. You will need to replace this to mount the V8. Second, the 292 will need to have a matched bell housing as the 223 and 292 do not interchange. You also need the bell housing to match your current transmission, a three speed bell or a four speed bell as they do not have the same pattern bolt patterns for the transmissions. You can use a 57 to 64 bell housing and engine. Look on Craig's list Phoenix as they come up time to time.
On the right side picture, is that the cross member at the bottom? Also, is the rear differential the standard "9? I'm trying to match it up with pictures online but I can't find a definitive answer. Finally, do you happen to know what type of transmission is on it? It's the first picture. Thank you so much in advance, The Dude.
Well the good thing for that truck if the side shot is current is that "patina" is one of the hot lick looks right now for a lot of guys and a well scrubbed and maybe polished a bit old paint job spins their wheels so the paint and body work might wait until you have all the mechanical work squared away. I'm not not well versed on That model of Ford except from experience know that you have to have the exact matching pieces as Garbz said in post 2. There is no "they all fit" on those Fords. Still if you find the right pieces it shouldn't be a hard or lengthy swap and if the six runs decently I'd drive it with the six until I had all the pieces collected to put it together with the 292. Better to put to the F100 meet with the six and keep the hood closed than not go at all. As it's a correct engine for that model of truck and not something that isn't proper by F100 nut standards even though you will see everything under the sun under F100 hoods drive it and have a good time if you don't get the 292 pieces gathered up. It has it's own story to go with it anyhow.
V8 Y-blocks use a front mount and no side mounts. Check if the sixer has a single front mount which mounts with a single bolt through a rubber biscuit on to the front crossmember. If it does, you may have the correct front mount (have to check further). If you just need a front mount for the 292 that bolts to the front of the engine then to the front crossmember, I probably have one.
Nice Truck!! They are called a Fridge by those that have them for obvious reasons, and are now getting quite popular, esp. the shortbox versions. If you do the Facebook thing there are a couple of good groups ***ociated just with these trucks and the folks love to help. I have a '60 shortbox stepside that is my daily driver, original paint, and is an ex Air force truck (decals, tags and all) with just enough patina.... I'm running A 347 stroker with a T5.... Love your truck and the story behind it... good luck on the project. Tom
cool truck and story why not just leave the 6 in there if it aint broke dont fix it love the old weathered paint B
