  2. It seems to me that the manufacturers were in a "cubic Inch" war where they had to do one better than the next.

    Very interesting!

This might just be me, but when people ask my to Pick a random number, I always end up with a number that relates to cars.

    340
    350
    354
    316
    4.11
    331
    Etc.

    Is this only me?

No, I do that, too. Had a new electronic control board for one of the building systems installed, and my (female) boss asked what password I had assigned. Told her it was based on the cubic inches and # of cylinders of an easy to remember engine size, got the predictable eyeball roll routine. Hey, at least I don't have to write it down anywhere. 7. The Missouri Department of Transportation built three new bridges on I-49 in Cass County a few years ago. They were easy to remember: one was at 283rd Street, another at 307th Street and the last at 327th Street.

Went to Napa and asked the kid behind the counter for a set of points for a 283. He asked, " Is that a 6 cyl?"
I thought everybody knew what a 283 was.
His response might not be so unusual today, but it was 1978.

Burned my ass on a 6013 once!

The code is embedded a little deeper when it comes to Diesel engines identified by the number of cylinders followed by the displacement per cylinder.

When talking to someone you don't know about specifics an amatuer will call 4.250 as 'four point two five' and old pro will say '4 dot two fifty' - that immediatly tells the guy on the other end just who he is dealing with, especially if a telephone call. You get on the phone to a machinest and tell him the bore out to be 'four point one two five' and you'll hear a brief silence on the other end while the macinest re-evaluates just whom he is talking to.

Great subject! You can tell the car guys pretty quick. I was at a car show at Jack Murphy stadium with my avatar and a guy asked me about the drivetrain in my truck. I said "its a '70 .030 over 429 with a toploader 4 speed and a 9" with 3.73s". He said "Huh?" I had to translate for him.:D
