Event Coverage No offense intended.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Aug 4, 2016.

  1. Let me first start off by saying I'm am not a world traveled person at all so take the following as an unknowledgeable comment.
Is it just me or does it seem as though the Europeans have been trapped in a time in history. I mean every show coverage I see, they have seems to be full of REALLY cool rides and LOTS of them. It seems there are no billet ridden street rods in existence over sees?
Again I mean no offense to the USA or Canada or etc. Because I'm sure there's lots of good shows here too, but I often see a mixed show. I'm just jealous that I can't ever seem to get to any of the shows in North America that are a diehard traditional show.
Seeing all the event coverage of what looks like amazing traditional activities makes me want to get on a plane and take a holiday for a few months from here!

Building a Hot Rod on the other side of the Atlantic is much harder than it to build one here.
Parts are harder to find, more expensive, and if you have them shipped from the USA you have to deal with customs and delays.
So basically with every move you make the stakes are higher, which probably leads to more research and planning.

Maybe that is the reason the overseas builders took to a cooler buildstyle than the Flavor Of The Day, which is what Billet cars were.
( and they were right, Billet is as dead as Disco.
And Traditional Hot Rods are as relevant as ever ..)

The UK Low Flyers club existed before the Shifters did, for example...

If you attend a "Street Rod" event overseas, you will see more of that if you want. Gary

x2 those are no doubt selectively photographed (a good thing) car clubs with rules such as the Hamb or events much like TROG and many of the other restricted events.

It is refreshing to see whether its here or there or wherever.

As I have said before public unregulated events will be populated with oodles of OT stuff and that is the way it is these days. So many trends so as most of us do we go with the flow and try to visit the more traditional venues when possible.

The Guys and Gals that send us coverage know what floats here. You are correct the worldly Hotrod scene is really great to see, appreciate and even visit.

But for the most part our brothers in Europe are hard core traditionalist and they get it!

What ever it cost us it cost them 3 and 4 times as much and when they build a hot rod they are all in. HRP

Hi border boy: I don't know what part of the large country Canada you are from. However a suggestion if you are in the East you should plan to make a trip to The Ty-Rods Old Timers Reunion. The Ty-Rods are oldest and most traditional club in M***achusetts. On September 11, 2016 the Reunion takes place in Lancaster, MA. You will find it is a wonderful gathering of the faithful and many many traditional rods and customs come from all over New England. You will not be disappointed! TEB

And let's not forget that the whole Tuner thing started in Germany in the '70s.

Way back when....1990 or so, Street Rodder ( yeah, yeah, but it was the only consistent vintage hot rod magazine on the shelf at the local Food Giant) had a feature about these Rock a Billy Brits and their cars.
Featured was a 27 T Roadster Banger powered..
    An AV8...
And What would be a candidate today for a TROG Model A Racer.
Steel 16s bias plys, all traditional builds with vintage power. HAMB friendly cars before the HAMB.
Referred to as Low Buck or Budget the author admired these cars in a sea of Billet and neon paint jobs. The article even said to watch out for guys like this. They will be parked out side the show and maybe reawaken the roots of hot rodding.
Cars built this way....are never out of style.

  16. They have billet rides, but what gets the coverage is traditionl rods. it is popular now there and is popular in our coverage. You may note that every major city in the US for example has a yearly car show that showcases the new models. But it probably gets little or no coverage on line or in any of the publications that you are reading.

You are never seeing a cross section of the world when you are reading a journalistic publication just a snap shot.

From seeing what goes on in the Advance Design truck brigade in Europe and elsewhere I'd have to say selective photography is one reason we only see the traditional vehicles and meets and it is likely that The traditional car and bike events are stricter there as far as what gets in the gate.

Oh Yeah. The traditional Hot rod gatherings in Sweden and Norway doesnt let any billett **** in. No discussion. To me a full dressed billett STREET rod is as interresting as a New Honda hybrid :)

Just my opinion, the cost of shipping parts from US to Europe, eliminates a lot of the bolt on ****. Builders will buy more complete cars, and repair/ paint / plate what's there, or use a similar equivalent from an available car.
I don't think there's as much sitting and rotting type stuff around.
