I was wondering if anyone new if the doors and other body parts of a 1929 chevy coach were interchangeable/ dimensions as a 1931 Chevy coach thanks
Different body lines between 29 & 31. Even if they would fit, they wouldn't match Sent from my SGH-T399 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
No, the four door door is much shorter. 31-32 chevy's have the same body line, but the eliminated the visor in 32 and rounded the fronts of the door tops. The smaller body Pontiac also used the same body.
Pontiac body lines are similar, but not the same. Will keep an eye for doors for ya. If ya had all 4 doors from a 4dr., ya could use part of the rears to lengthen the fronts.
The 5 Pass coupe uses the same doors as the Coach. And is even harder to find! http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/parts/1929_32/2932mppl200.html http://1931chevrolet.com/Production3.htm might help you find stuff in future
Check with the VCCA guys for parts too. Don;t mention you are a rodder. http://vcca.org/forum/ubbthreads.php/forum_summary
Thanks everyone I appreciate the info. Nearly impossible to find answers just searching aimlessy. Thanks Paul I appreciate that. now I know this may be frowned upon but for the price of doors and the fact the rest of the car needs patches. Doors are roughly 6" of unfixable metal and they only make 3.5" high patches for the Doors. So if I level cut the bottom of the car 6". Then patch it with the 3.5" patches that will give me a car basically 2.5" shorter. wasn't planning on doing a chop but feel like windows may look to big so a small chop of 2.5" to balance it out. any thoughts?
Yes, it was done in the past, but never seemed to look good...especially unchopped makes it worse. Why cut them off now? Door bottoms can be made any size by someone, if not you. You also may get lucky to find doors from a "dry/desert" State, that have no wood left at all, but have mint metal.
Just a thought, I appreciate your opinion. im in mass so for the price of shipping and the doors seems like it might get outrages Unless I can come across a good deal. What's a good deal For two good doors? Nothing will be done till winter so ill keep searching just leaving that as last resort.
And I'm in CT.. my son just took me to the biggest commercial farm in town last evening, to ID some old trucks in barns for the grandson. This family bought countless farmsteads since forever, that all have even more barns and sheds.. I can't believe so much vintage car and truck stuff is still in barns. The grandson does not know what is in every barn or shed they own. Doors that are stored often have no ID, so nobody knows how to advertise them. The must be doors around. 2 door sedan is harder to find, but they are out there. by the way, I meant guys HERE have made entire door skins, right up to the belt moulding. .
probably quite a bit of crown in the door skins, it's not too difficult to make an edge on a flat piece of metal and call it a patch panel. it's not so easy to make the lower half of a curved door skin
Junkyards have crowned metal, roof is a good donor. Late models have alloy steel, so look for slightly older metal 25 years old. Make thin plywood contour gauge patterns to fit the door in both directions, test them on donor cars and find a roof that works. .
But understand that having an English wheel and knowing how to actually use one are not one and the same, and the guys that know how to use them correctly rarely work for peanuts.
Thanks for the input everyone ill be searching Just not many Chevys out therE. A metalshaper is too rich for me. Wish I new how to get into those types of farms fj.. im assuming the one you went to isn't open to public.
Just a thought, but you can buy model A skins from belt-line down, if they're close? Or, use the skins from the 29-30 Chevy doors you spoke of.
That's probably a better option to cut the skin ouT. I thought the model a doors are narrower about 30" and the chevys are 35" wide. I could have read wrong
As mentioned above... Just reskin the lower part of the door. Coupe/sedan doors are out there if you're not in a huge rush... I will check around here with a couple of early Chevy guys.
No rush that sounds like that's what I wil be doing. My plan is to tackle the suspension/steering first before I even start on body, do to how much work it Will require. Thanks a lot I appreciate everyone's advice and for any one who keeps an eye out.
