Put the car on a lift and move the steering wheel. See were the slack is coming from. Maybe you have a or more worn tie rod ends , A-arm bushings falling apart,a worn idler arm or king pins/ ball joints. If all of this is tight, see if your sector shaft on your steering box is moving around and has play in the housing, if so, replace the sector shaft bushing. If the shaft doesn´t have any play in it, you can adjust the worm gear to sector shaft lash by loosening the lock nut on top of the steering box and tighten the adjusting bolt. This should remove the slack in your steering. If not it´s time to get a rebuild kit.

I have replaced the tie rod ends, and the king pins feel ok but I've got some to install anyway, the idler are seems ok to but i will have another look, the sector shaft on your steering box isn't something I've even looked at so thanks for that, I've tried tightening the worm gear to sector shaft lash and while it did make it a bit better it also made it worse o_O there wasn't as much wander but there is a sharp shift in direction when turning right hand turns... you start to turn in and then all of a sudden its like dipping into the corner and you have to correct...very unsettling

I would try to adjust your box again. These instructions are for a 56.

Sorry about that. This is the section for a power steering box.
