I wonder if the crankcase breather tube came in chrome as an option???

 

The first photo is an HQ Holden sedan in the paint shop circa 1971-73 and the second is the Falcon GT HO that was one of the fastest street cars in the early 70's.
Winner of the 1971 Bathurst 500, driven by Allan Moffat, the Phase III has been described as "...simply one of the best cars in the world, a true GT that could take on Ferraris and Astons on their own terms..."

No the mystery engine was the 427 forerunner of the BBC. The z11 was a 427 special version of the 409. They both came out in 1963 before the GM racing ban. The mystery engine was pictured on the cover of HRM ( and thus named by them ) and was introduced at Daytona for the 500 and the z11 was a drag package with the aluminum front end and other light weight parts strictly for drag racing. This package included the special 409 type 427 engine. The z11 was never called the Mystery engine.

 

I was there at the time and we sure called the ZII the mystery engine before the next one came along.

 

I was there at the time too racing a 409 (Hayden Proffitt drove our car one time to help us sort out some issues with it) and the Z11 was not called the Mystery Engine. 47 Ragtop is correct.
