Mark, Wanna sell your old radiator? I could use it in my '40 .

 

Fixed my passenger side toe board and installed the hood today.

After scrubbing the hood, I took it up by the neighborhood pool for some quick photos. Still need to paint the grille sides to better match the body, but it's getting there.

 

Big 3 at the Woodburn drags. Chevy, Ford, Chrysler(Dodge). My '40 with the Olds flippers. Took 'em off. Right now I'm trying some of the full moons like on that Dodge.

 

Love the flippers on it!

 

This '40 Coupe was at NSRA Appreciation Day in Boyne CIty, Michigan at Classic Instruments. I didn't talk to the owner but this is an awesome '40 Coupe.

 

That was in this years Cobo hall coverage as well. Lido lavender works good on a ''39/'40, but I see it a LOT lately.

I think this one has a very subtle chop. I decided to take a few pictures of it. So what's your opinion , is it chopped?

A nice 40 Mercury Sedan Convertible




A chopped Sedan. I would not do this to a sedan but ... here is what it looks like when you lower the lid a lot.


The 40 Ford special parking was not very populated. Probably because it was not the best location. With so much grass available elsewhere I was not all that excited about parking on the pavement with the nearest shade 100 feet away. But I am a loyal forty fan so I parked there anyway. We didn't stay by the car much anyway.


This years show had more sedan convertibles on hand than I had ever seen together before.

Well that's it. There were not all that many Forties at the show this year. I skipped a few 40's because they were not HAMB friendly. It seems like this show gets bigger every year. Although there are still a lot of pre 49 cars in attendance I see the post 48 and Muscle cars are gaining in popularity. Nothing we can do about it though so we might as well ride the tide while still enjoying our favorite body styles.

The Saturday night activities at this show are quite lively with cruising and music on the fairgrounds. We headed for the Motel about 10 PM and the activities seemed to be going strong. So if you live in the Northwest and want to spend a couple of days immersed in the car culture put this run on your schedule and bring your 40!

 

I think it's chopped. Damn, that burnt orange convert is practically identical to what I am doing to mine... Is that a WA state car?

Oregon, George . Can't say I like the taillights..... but it is a very nice car.

 

I was going to use the stock tail-lights. It's so close to what I was planning, it's virtually a twin. Nosed and peaked hood, 2" chop, Frenched rear plate with a plexi cover, clean decklid stock side trim and door handles. I am doing nerfs and white interior and top, more of a late fifties/early sixties theme, but it's really close.
I guess on the plus side, it does look really nice...

 

I would say the coupe in question is chopped.

Back in 1961, I was able to buy a 40 Ford Sedan Delivery for $160. It was one of the fastest cars in Long Beach at the time. I pictured myself driving around racing that delivery. It had a big 348 motor/3 speed in it and it sounded fast. The acceleration was pretty good for a sedan delivery vs the big motor stock cars of the time. I asked if he wanted to sell it and he said yes. The owner was not satisfied with the paint on the car and wanted to start another project. But, he wanted the 348 for his next car. He had painted the car in his garage and it turned out a salmon pink instead of a racer orange. It was stock looking with standard black rims and chrome beauty rims. The photo is a copy of the one from 1961. (it is a photo of my other delivery I bought in 71. I set up the 71 version to look like the 61 version)

He put in a stock flathead motor and the car was ready to go within a week. For $160, it was a steal. I drove it all over So Cal and it served daily driver duty for high school. It also went on many surf trips during this time. The back was empty except for a couple of sleeping bags and a cooler. This car was bare bones…no radio, thread bare bucket seats and a spare tire for a rear seat in the back. The longboards stuck out of the rear window easily.

I sold it in 1964 for $360 and never saw the car again. It was a fun car to drive around. A pure backyard daily driver. How did it compare to the 71 version? A flathead vs a 327/350 with powerglide/ac/ full upholstery…you be the judge…but, for a teenager, that raw version was a blast.
