Looks like a race car to me!
Very cool, stay after it. And I know what you mean about forgetting to take pics while working. I really applaud those that do and post build threads!

One aspect of this Hobby is the variety, here I was asked to work on a Cook head for a Banger.
I was able to adapt a set of rockers from a Miller-Highspeed without having to make too many new parts.
This is a really nice set of rockers and should work just fine.
In looking over the chambers and ports I noticed the sparkplugs are set up for a cartridge fire style and really think that performance can be improved by moving the plug into the chamber. You can now see the plug tip down in the chamber instead of being placed up about 3/4" and a narrow port. This will require the piston domes to be machined to the chambers and I have all the CNC code generated, will test run in a week or so.

    John,
Those are very nice! They may well work on my Alexander.
I need to get the stand mount hole spacing and rocker shaft height from the head deck, if you can kindly furnish, or give me a contact person.
I've made some stands from aluminum, but still have the original 34 Chevy rockers.
It also looks from the pics that you spaced the stands up, as well as modifying the mounting holes. I have a problem in that the mounting holes in the head are not drilled and tapped square to the deck (!), so some of the studs are at a slight angle, hitting the hole wall.
    Thanks!

  7. hotrodA,
Thanks for the kind words, I cannot take much credit here on this.
I think the ***embly is from a Miller Highspeed head, truth is rumored to be surviving ***embly from a Notorious ForEverFour Member's estate. In any event, rocker geometry is not magic, I find it real easy to determine by using autocad. Not being familier with the dimensions of the Alexander, I can only ***ume the valves are not canted in the head and this makes life real easy. Also, I will be surprised if the valves are not same size in/ex, this makes for simple geometry as they were typically spaced the same as the lifters. As for the crooked studs/bolts, you can always pilot on the bottom of the stands and clearance the tops. The other tip, once the ***embly is done and head bolted on, have the pushrods made to fit exactly the correct length. I have made my own before and it is not worth it. There are too many NASCAR motor parts available and pushrods are a very common custom part.

All the best, show us some pics of the Alexander, J

Thanks for the response. I have the geometry figured out and the valves figured out. Int and exh are the same, and 1.88 BBC exh valves had the right stem o.d. and length. Made the stands' height to fit accordingly. The originals are cutdown stock vintage Chev. (I think).
BUT, there is no way (pins, etc) to locate the stands, and the poor machine practice on the studs' holes left me thinking that they wouldn't be clamped sufficiently.
Currently set aside until I feel comfortable putting it back together with that.

Try Rocker Arms Unlimited in Redding, Calif. 530-242-1316. I have had them make several sets for Rajo heads and roller rockers and stands for a Rutherford head. Fair prices

John Neilson - I looked at the pics of the Cook head you worked on and you mentioned you moved the spark plug so the electrode was now in the combustion chamber. It looks to me that you 'aimed' it at the exhaust valve. Was this by design? Does it produce a better, more efficient burn, more power?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Alexander head pics:

1.88. BBC exh valves for I&E, Chevy retainers and keepers, Ford Pinto valve springs,(mockups in the pic), 34 Chevy rockers, homemade stands and a new shaft (orig. in the pic.) homemade intake in the works for dual 81/97's. apologies for the ****py cell pics.

  12. Mike,

The plug is central in the chamber, the picture makes it look like it favors one side. The idea here is to get the source of ignition right in the center of the kernel to promote an even burn all the way across the chamber. Typically, a cartridge fire system needs more spark lead to burn all the fuel. As for favoring one valve more than another, you can study many chambers and find all kinds of different theories. As far as I am concerned, if it doesn't get hit by valve or piston I am good with placement.

  13. They Are the people that provide the rockers for the Serr/Miller OHV. They're very helpful folks.

  14. If you want to run 6 volts you should google " fun projects" and check out their stock looking electronic regulators that look like stock cut outs. They make one that will make your 6 volt generator put out 12 volts if you want it they say.

    Thanks for the spot-on info!

  16. Well I think you would multiply 3.78 by .74

Before you ask, here is the rest of it
    3.78 x 168= 635 rounded off divide that into 1/2 rear tire dia, in this case 14.74 for 6.50 16 x RPM's we'll use 2250 =33187divide by 635=52MPH
26% overdrive or 2.79 final drive at 2250 would be 70 MP H hope you can understand how I arrived at the answer. If you use full dia of rear tire then multiply by 336 instead of 168. 168 or 336 are the constants.

  17. I had some 16" Kelsey's that were/are pretty rusty. We put them into a washtub with 4 gallons white vinager. Soaked them 2 days + on each side and they are rust free but we lost about 1 gallon to evaporation. Tub was not covered.

That's good to know, always looking for a way to rid the rust other than selling it ;).

  19. It loosens the rust and some of the old paint. If you hose it off then you can brush the rust off easily.
Now I gotta find someone to widen one. Seems to be a lost art around here. Haven't had any done since the 90's.

Eric Vaughn used to widen them, Not sure if he's still dong that these days.
You might try Collin's Wheel in Bellflower @ 8836 Alondra almost @ Lakewood Bl. (562) 630-6546

I like it when stuff works.
Took a ride in my '29 shaking it down for the run to the LARS and ran up to 79 mph up a 4% grade to 7200' elevation and it was still pulling. I think I can keep up with the V8's no problem. Had to post this today as you will think I'm fooling you tomorrow.
