My friend wants to buy a set of the Dormer replacement steel wheels and would like to know how good they are ? I told him that a question on the H.A.M.B. about the wheels would be the best way to find out Thanks, DND
I know this isn't a direct answer, but I came to the conclusion a long time ago that nothing is ever as good as OEM.
No 'Brands' at Summit Racing named Dormer Only Dorman, see here: https://www.summitracing.com/search...Default&SortOrder=Ascending&autoview=SKU&ar=1
The Dorman brand has been around for a long time, but these days you never know whether it's still the same company or if someone has bought them out and trying to make a quick buck with sub standard parts. I would do some serious checking this out before a buy.
A bit of searching brings up info that claims that they are built to oem specs with metal that is the correct thickness. I'd think that they are what a lot of tire stores sell as replacement wheels or for snow tire wheels. They have to be as good as the one size fits everything smoothies that a lot of us run on our rigs that may not have the correct center hole size for our hubs.
It's still the same company (since 1978), I've always found their quality to be at least decent. Besides their fastener/hardware line, they also sell OE-style parts or repair parts that used to be dealer-only bits. Saved me a bunch of money on a wiper linkage repair on my ex's OT car...
I use a lot of Dorman hardware parts. Nothing like finding and old school parts store with a long row of their orange and black parts drawers. Every oddball clip and fastener you could ever need and if you search their online catalog they have all sorts of underhood parts like washer reservoirs and overflow bottles for prices better than used stuff from junk yards.
I'm glad to hear it's the same company and ownership/operation, as so many once great companies have been bought out for the name and then the bean counters go to work and put all the products out to low bidder and the quality hits the bottom. Fram Filters is the perfect example, once was one of the best filters you could buy, and rated best back then by such folks as Consumer's Report. The along came the M&A people and now the filters aren't worth the trouble to install if given to you, unless you buy the racing filters that so far I understand, are still US made.
It kind of boils down to OEM wheels that are 30-40 years old been through all sorts of weather, multiple mounts and dismounts of tires, and who the heck knows what else, or new wheels being sold by a reputable company at a fair price. For my money I would go with the new wheels. KK
Thanks guys for the input as my friend was thinking of buying new wheels at the dealer, but these would be less money And he was wondering about the quality of the non factory wheel VRS the OEM wheels DND
Those interested in new U.S. made wheels might want to look at what Wheel Vintiques has to offer. (o[]o)
I have Vintiques on my Ford and they're very nice. Didn't know they were an Alliance vendor at the time, they were $75 at Summit.
