He guys!!! So I have been gathering parts and pieces (slowly) In hopes to build my 57 chevy into A g***er style car. I have front and rear axles, wheels/tires, old van front seats, on and on... As I was day dreamin I got to thinking... What the hell am I gonna do with this thing when (and IF) it's ever done. I have an OT chevelle that I bracket race a few times in the summer. I have a 62 Bel Air that is a great cruiser. SO... what do you guys do with yours??? I think that a sp**** interior, roll bars and 4.33 gears ain't gonna make it a road trippin machine. Lay it on me!

hmmm....last fall, I drove mine to St Louis and ran it in Drag Week then drove home. And a couple more smaller similar events over the next half year. Other than that, I mostly just drive it around town every few days, or every week or two. Take it out on Saturday night and wish other guys with hot cars would be out, but they usually aren't.

    It's a good question.

image.jpeg image.jpeg I drive mine to a couple of shows and local cruise nites. I try to split time up on both of mine. Example Friday meltdown drags I took my 39 to the swap meet Saturday meltdown drags drove my 56 Chevy original g***er to the show. Sometimes just go for a g***er ride just because. I have it !

  5. I take mine to the track a few times a year. I also drive it as much as I can afford to , a 4:10 gear and 7 mi per gal. not to street friendly .Every so often cruzing you run into the right guy . Last one was a dual turbo bmw ,fast car but not fast enough for the old dodge g***er

Up until I realized the history of the car, and then restored it meticulously to it original configuration, mine spent many years Street Racing Don't try this at home kids) and Bracket Racing. Along with the occasional street drive.
Once it was restored I just showed it with the occasional Cackle - After almost 50 years of surviving without ever being hurt, It was too historic and too significant for me the be the fool that wrecked it!

Build it, join a g***er club and race it at nostalgia races that way young people can experience what we did back in the day (real heads up drag racing)!

My 37' was 100% race car and on the street a few times to put some time on something new, and it was no fun to drive as it was stiff - hard gl*** seat - loud and it was either on or off with loud petal

Its good it was found after 25 yrs missing and a not so good restoration, but at least it will be saved

The down side is that it is a private collection and never showed, so people don't get a change to see a nice car from the early g***er days and that is a real shame

Let's see, it was raced about every other weekend, driven to work, take kids to school, go to cruise nights, take it to lunch. The key is making it pump gas friendly, even with a full spool, 4.57 gears and a 4000 stall convertor it's a fun ride. Just don't expect it to be something it's not.

I drive mine every single day. Go to cruise night, the strip, the grocery store, the parts store, lol everywhere. Even took the little lady on our first date in it "with the mufflers out of course"

    Hello,
Back in 1960, after we built the 40 Willys and installed the new 671, we drove it around town. But, the 2 gallon Moon Tank limited us to how far we could go. Over to a local speed shop where we got some work done on the heads, over to a drive in restaurant, a burger joint, friend's houses, etc. It was a blast to drive and very powerful, so it was tempting to "floor it." Once on an empty street, we did floor it and hoped that we had enough gas to get home. The ride was ok, but the seats were not for long distance driving. It steered a little rough, but it was manageable. Obviously not a daily driver, but we looked at it like a "tune up ride." The car stayed relatively cool, did not overheat, and did I say the 671 makes this wonderful noise that is so impressive that it certainly was a head turner... Good times before the end. This was what hot rodding is all about, having fun in your build.

I'm kind of in the same mode, I am converting afour door, then will do the g***er thing. I live 1/2 miles from the track and a lot of old street guys show up on Friday nights just to make noise. Also hope to go to some of the weeknight ,no awards type shows.
This one is just for fun. too old to get serious.

Work on it and think about driving it. Plan will be mostly race taking it to local cruise nights. Maybe a drive to work we will see.

Raced it, took it apart to upgrade it, spent money on it, worked on it, let it set because it wasn't going the way I wanted it to go, sat and looked at it, cut everything out of it I had spent money on, worked on it some more, spent more money, work, money, work, money, looked at it while I gathered up more money, .................. working on it again. Hope to get it race ready and make a few more p***es some day. I guess we'll see. Making it a street car never entered the picture.

It's not to late to reconsider.
If you build it in a way that you "will" enjoy driving it distances, the end result will be happiness.
Not need to stick another straight axle the front, no need for 4.33 gears and crazy-snotty engines that you can't afford to drive.
Been there, done it, Sold it.

Make it look like this and drive it to Florida and I'll go cruising :)

Good point here. Everyone these days think nose up, straight axle, fenderwells, ect. Alot of the best looking cars aren't super wild. Also alot of those pics were taken under acceleration so people think the front end has to be sky high. I like the stance on the 55 above. But i like the look with the front end jacked slightly and the *** end dropped. It's all about what u like and what u really want to do with your car when it's done.

My old Austin g***er just made it's first run to the local cruise night. The seating/pedals are awkward. It's loud and smelly inside due to the ****py, holey old aluminum firewall and floor. Everything rattles and squeaks. It's a blast to drive! It will light the tires with a twitch of the gas pedal. It does steer and stop pretty good now that I got a new steering box in it and made all four brakes work. It barks the tires at each gear change and the 4.30 gears have the little small block Chevy humming nicely at 55mph.
I'm hoping to make some p***es at Eagle Field and/or Kingdon with it after I fix some scary ch***is issues and build new ladder bars. It needs seat belts and a rollbar. I'm gathering parts to put a 6-71 on it also.
I need to redo the exhaust system right away though - it's too quiet from the outside!

Personal preference but, this is what the gas cl*** what about all out cars doing all they could to shave a few tenths. Without fender well headers and straight axles you have a stock car.

  24. I don't have much to contribute, but I have a sweet little tunnel ram 289 sitting on a stand looking for g***er home.
However if I had car, I would hope to drive it as often as I could.

Well I have been slowly gathering parts. So far I have a 58 chevy pickup axle, 9" with 4.33s and a spool, a Liberty pro-shifted ford top loader, Hurst inline shifter, Lakewood bell, 9" slot mags with 28X11.5 slicks, Tunnel ram, and some really simple square looking old chevy van seats! A real good friend of mine has a nice little 350 that ran in the 12.10 range in a nova with 4.30 gears that he would sell me. I just NEED to build this thing!!! I just wish there were some g***er events realatively close to my area. Like I said, when I do go bracket racing I take my chevelle which usually runs really well and consistant (11.77-11.75). So do I REALLY NEED another "race" car??? HELL YA!!! But what am I gonna do with it???!!!!! AHHHH!!!!!

56 Chevy. 55 Chevy truck straight axle. Mopar 8-3/4 rear with an aluminum bolt through center section 4:56 gear. Jerico 4 speed. Vertigate long shifter. Blown 355 with a hilborn 4 port. Magnesium American racing lemans on the front. Romeo palamides on the back 15x8. Full 12pt cage. Started life being a street g***er that would see some track time. Now I think it's a race car that will see some street time. Hopefully I will get it out next year in primer. I have a build thread if your looking for ideas.

My next build I plan on making slightly more street friendly.
