Hot Rods 155r15 tire on a 6" wide rim

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ol' Blue, Aug 27, 2016.

  1. I have new 155r15 tires and I would like to put them on 6x15 rims. The tire chart recommends 5.5" max for the rim. Does anybody have any knowledge about whether they can be fitted to a 6" rim and is that safe?

It can be done, but it might look a little funny.

    Think lowrider-esque:

This would be a exaggeration of the effect. This is a 155 on a 7" wide wheel.

If it can hold up an Impala lowrider, it should be okay on your car.

1/2" total difference? That's 1/4" farther out for each sidewall/bead. I've fudged tire/wheel sizes much more than that and never had any problems whatsoever. That's why tires are made from rubber - it's flexible! Don't even think twice about it.

I have a set of 155 X 15 tires on 15 x 4 steelies that look like they are factory. On your 6" rims, the tires will look weird as Hell. Low riders do stranger things than what you want to do, but it isn't very safe. Min/max rim widths are posted for a reason.

It isn't a mere 1/2" .......the max recommended width is already wider than the rim width best suited to allow the tire to perform as intended. And, I have my doubts about 5.5" being an accurate statement for a 155 tire size. Tires are designed to do a lot more than merely hold air.

They will fit but they don't look good, the wheel is wider than the tire so when you get to close to the curb you s****e the wheel edge instead of the tire.

Exactly. There are other factors. The width of the tire beads on the rim partially determines the tires tread footprint (with inflation pressure). The wider rim also allows the tire bead package to twist when it's seated on the wheel bead seat, which can lead to separation or cracking at the bead. Ideally, the spec rim width should be close to the tread width, certainly not more than the sidewall cross section width.

Hate to say it but I did that on the 48 at one time and the rim did stick out way past the sidewall of the tire. Hard as hell to air the tires up too.

  11. Thanks for all the replies. I am looking to buy new wheels for my model A and I already have the tires. I will heed your advice and look for a narrower wheel.

Jesus, thanks for the heads up. I never realized my RPU looked "****ing stupid". 145 SR 15 Michelins on 6" Americans. All this time I thought it looked fine.
