Been toying with the idea, always wanted one. My 40 chev coupe project was going to get my 434 and a tunnel ram, but I'm not getting any younger and I would really like to build a stout 350 or 383 sb and put a 6.71 or even a 8.71 on it with 2 boost ref carbs. A few questions, would the MSD 6, and my billet MSD dizzy be enough fire power? I have a used MSD Boost Master I could send in and have checked out. I could sell the 434, it has a Motown block, dart heads and a forged Eagle rotating ***y, so it ought to bring decent money. Has anyone run Weiand Blowers? I may know where I can get a complete kit with carbs if he still has it. Let's see some pics of your blower set ups and maybe some advice from those that have done it.
I haven't tried it on a small block, but I've had a 6-71 on a couple big blocks for a long time. what you need as far as carbs, ignition, etc probably depends on how much boost you'll run. If you are looking for something mild like around 8 psi, you don't need anything fancy...stock carbs and point distributor with a stock coil will work. You can use more expensive stuff if you want, it's just not really necessary. This turd has been in the nines a couple times...nothing fancy here, at all. Yes, the heads are 46 years old.
My 406 has 471 blower, 10 to 12 lbs. boost. I use MSD 6al. blaster 3 coil, plug wires etc. Works real well. Tuning is key on blower motors. As Jim stated, if you just want to tool around, nothing fancy is really needed. Just dont run it to lean.
Squirrel, I know all about yours, you're famous, remember? I followed the whole trip you made, pretty impressive. I'm going to run this some, street and strip, I'll use better fuel at the strip. I done have the MSD stuff, and I plan on a AFR gauge and reading plugs alot.
Here is one I had for about 20 years. Hampton 671, 2 Edelbrock 600's, 355 SBC, 7.5:1 static compression, TH400. Ran it 19% under and most of the time it was in vacuum. Only got about 6 lbs of boost when I got on it but I was after the look and the sound. Got 15 mpg on the freeway. 3.50 rear gear.
I get away with pump premium unleaded when I run at the strip, with about 8.5 compression, aluminum heads, and not a whole lot of boost. The neat thing about blower motors is you can make them lazy, and they'll last a long time, be very streetable, and still go kind of fast. don't need wild gearing, stall, etc with all that torque. Although starting with a bigger displacement engine makes this even more true.
