Any one got a set (all 4 pieces) of 38-47 Ford COE door hinges? I'm thinking about widening my front fenders. The hinges would need to be extended also for the doors to clear the wider fenders. thanks! Rick
I was looking at this possible modification last night and I am beginning to think just extending the hinges will not be the way to go. If I widen the fenders 2.5", it looks like I only need more door swing room near the apex of the door's swing where the door attempts to come by the outer edge of the fender. Does this make any sense? Any ideas on creating such a hinge. I'm thinking something with more than 1 hinge point, but can't visualize it yet......
Thanks for the reminder... I sent him a message and he replied that he widened the fenders by 1.5" and the doors still cleared by 1/4". I saw similar results with a 1.5" 2x4 mockup. I think the 2.5" fender extension I need will require at least a 1" hinge extension. I've yet to find donor hinges for the project. I REALLY want to keep mine in place during the mods as well as make sure the whole idea will really work.
Well couldn't you cut the two pieces of hinge and add a half inch to each piece to make them swing out the right amount ?
That's certainly the theory. I guess it's the computer programmer in me that want's to test it before going "live".
I don't have any Fords here to look at, but on my Autocar the hinges are held on with 4 bolts. Could you move the hinges out and just bolt them on with 2 bolts for mock-up purposes. Even if distances weren't exactly right, it would give you a good idea if your theory would work.
Seems like you already know what to do, get the 8 plates add an 1". If hinges are tapped, and the screws are 5/16" get a letter L drill bit and transfer punch your triangular pattern, while plate is in drill press after drilling hole put tap in and tap hole straight. If hinges aren't tapped even easier transfer punch and drill 'em. Remember for the most part you are in unchartered waters, sometimes you have to just jump in and be the first to swim to shore! Good Luck!
