Looking for a new starter for my '63 327 SBC. My old starter does not start when hot, is close to the headers, and is a pain to get out with the headers. Is there a newer application I can use to get a smaller higher torque GM (Remy?) starter that will fit? The flywheel is 153 tooth and there are 9 teeth on the old starter. Larry
Tilton starter. You can spin the casing 180 degree which puts the solenoid underneath. Plenty of clearance.
These are the ones i use. Pretty much just a later model big block starter. Ive had wayyyyy better luck with these than any aftermarket starter, especially the starters that use the billet block to adapt the starter to the block. I have one in my 32 now and it works perfectly, and was not a super expensive unit either. Tony
This is what I am looking for. Is there a part number or a car/truck it fits that I can ask for? I need straight across bolt pattern like the original.
same problem on my 327 which is built , replaced several starters , tried mini no help ,61 cad is right , installed ford solonoid cranks : Great : problem gone , cheap fix .........
The one I was thinking of runs off a 168 tooth ring gear. Then I went hunting a bit and what you want fits a 95 Camaro Z28 with an LT1 http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_01920_1035908_4398&pt=01920&ppt=C0330 Official O'Reilly cheat sheet link. Jegs GM Performance link for new one http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Performance/809/10465143/10002/-1 The Delco 10465143 number should cross at what ever parts source you use.
That's what was going thru my mind as well. Had no idea GM's mini was available for the smaller 153 flywheel/flexplate. Another thought is this. Why doesn't every rodder automatically replace their 153 for a 168 ? It makes things easier on the starter doesn't it ?
Im pretty sure That second one with the Delco number is the one i use. I cant find the part number at the moment though. Something to consider, if you have a shop around thet rebuilds alt and starters, they may have one in stock, rebuilt much cheaper than 300. Im a mechanic by trade and do get decent deals on parts, and thats exactly what i did and do. Mine cost me under 200 and it works great. Tony
A buddy deal at the local Chevy dealer parts counter might bring the cost down on a new one. Not sure about the quality but you can get a new on off 5 Amazon for 54.95 delivered to the door with Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/Starter-Cama...t_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=CRN2XA913XZ8W7VAWHQV
Not sure what you mean by this. The delco number from mr48 chev was what I was looking for. The z28 starter may be for the 168 tooth flywheel as it has 11 teeth. I think the 153 tooth takes a 9 tooth starter. The parta stores wanted $160-170 but the net stores showing $40-70 range. Not sure why the big difference.
Use a Denso starter. They're set up for both flywheels, the starter can be "clocked" I loaded my "dead" race car onto a trailer with one of these.[it also had to push 480" at 12:1] http://www.ebay.com/itm/Starter-Che...aight-Mount-/331220758432?hash=item4d1e4bafa0
Johnny This is the GM small case starter for my 67 Nova, due to space limitations, these cars really need the 7 oclock exit belhousing for clutch throwout lever clearance which was the OEM setup with the 153 tooth flywheel. With big tube headers like I have, these cars don't have a lot of options for starters. This was sourced through a local boat refitter, note the "marine" callout on the housing. I honestly don't know the difference in this one because it was a "backdoor" deal so there was no paperwork with it. IIRC, GM sells the non marine version across the counter under a differerent part number.
I have had no luck with the mini starters. They do not last cranking a blown 406. Have a Powermaster 2.5 HP. NO TROUBLE!!
DDDenny, I've always been under the ***umption that a 153 GM mini did not exist but low and behold I seen it yesterday at the Long Beach Swap Meet from the same vendor I got my 168 from. My 168 is tiny and freed up lot's of space. Thing's must really be tight as you say to have to get that little extra bit of space. Do you have any pics to share on how you put 10 lbs. of stuff into a 5 lbs. box ?
I have one on my 283 and love it ! Just don't get a cheepo....My first one was one, and it didn't last long. Went to an auto parts store and bought a good one... Good luck
