Death, Evil, the Devil and hotrods?? A question

  1. I've noticed over the last years that many HAMBers have handles that have to do with satanism or death. I have been around rods, customs and racing for many years. It seems like a new constant now a days. What is the reason?

I should probably just keep my mouth shut, but:

Seems lame and against the rules of this board. No religion right???
I'm not religious, so it doesn't offend me in the slightest, but I think it is immature.

Maybe it matches their punk/rockasilly look???

I think it goes back to living on the edge and death defying behavior, like say, driving really fast in a car that doesn't brake very well or have safety glass, shoulder belts,etc.etc.
The satanic thing is the outlaw attitude ala the Hell's Angels and Satan's Angels. Same goes for iron crosses...

It's been around in some form for years. I'm 57 and been a gearhead for most of that time. Danger, Rebellion, Live Hard, Die Young, Leave a Good Looking Corpse, kind of mentality. But most of it is trying to relive the "outlaw" image that Hot Rodders used to have. I personally like a nicely painted pin-up over a devil. Wait, am I going to hell for that!?
    My two cents,

Yeah, is just symbol of death associated with the risk of flaming youth playing chicken in their jalopies...
Death fixations are big amongst streetrodders, too--every year great numbers of them choke when they confuse their plastic cheeseburgers on the drive-in tray with real ones after too many beers.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room that I could use to store '32 parts, dude.

    Total Rubbish!

Look at any old pocket mag and find ads for decals from JC Whitney etc, there's devil heads, zombies, blood, guts, monsters, gore. It's not new, ever heard of the Satan's Angels?

One of my most prized posessions is a '50s skull with red eyes that light up when you hit the brakes.

New my ass, this shit's as old as the hills, I bet there was a caveman with a likeness of Satan on his brand new 10,000 BC stone wheel.

Give yourself a history lesson and quit being so uptight.

I choose life myself. But I do have some very interesting human parts I intend to incorporate into my rod.
It is all about image, we all went through some stage of it probably. The tough guy machismo badass thing. Kind of like all you have to do is declare it for cool to be upon you.
Now I just want a car that will increase the prayer life of anyone who rides in it.

  20. I dunno I think its the whole defiance thing or a resemblance of the same more than anything else. I don't know that anyone has really openly considered themselves to be satanists, there is a pretty wide gap between chooseing an nasty sounding name or image and entering into some sort of religious act.

Actually I was or am planning on painting my roadster green, that's supposed to be bad luck or at least there was a time when a green race car or bike was considered bad luck. But I'm just a little bit defiant for an old fart with a silly screen name.

Why should it matter, people will call themselves what they want to call themselve. If they wanted to be everyones friend they would have picked the name "Mr. Nice" or "Cute Bunny Rodder". It's individual expression in a way that that person sees fit.

I give this post a few more hours before it's locked.

Look up "Coop". Kool shit. The devil? I guess you have to believe before it bugs ya. I have a thing for bones and skulls. I can't explain it. I have a skull snowmobile mask that scares the shit outta my dogs. Evil? What could be more evil and defiant than a hot rod? Does it bug you? Why? Childish? Nonsense. Just good clean (not always) fun. The bunny rodder...now that's some funny shit right there, I don't care who ya are:D

  24. I think it has to do with being on the outside. Guys that build the types of rides we do (rust showing etc) are on the outside fringe of even the mainstream of our hobby.

    dang, we talked about this...

  26. FWIW, it doesn't bug me or scare me or offend me. I just wondered about it. It seems to be a common ideal with you younger cats. I like some of the answers. About what I expected. Being a rebel just like all the other rebels.

Also FWIW, I got a rise out of Nads. An unexpected benefit.

  27. I loves me some gub'ment cheese = now that's funny...

some of this devil~stuff scares me because I'm such a big buck'n chicken...

"robber grin" was a way of echoing my real name and paying homage to the great cheerful thieves of the past...

I agree skulls frigging rock. Can't explain it.

I do like the smoking bunny stickers.

Satan is a fag, if he was all that and a bag of chips he would have created his own universe or something. Instead he just takes advantage of free will and tricks you into going with him? Pffft! How lame. God kicks his ass.

  30. Nads is right, it's been around since the 50s or before. I had a T in the early 60s with a devil's head decal on it.
