  1. Agree with Lurker, not smart. We have something like this now except they hold cardboard signs and hang out on intersections

    Many of these photos were likely taken in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in Tennessee. "Bear Jams" were not uncommon as the roads were narrow and traffic would be backed up as people would stop to feed and photograph the animals. My family got stuck in one such jam while travelling to Florida in the '60s. I read of one incident where a ranger reported coming upon a family as the husband was attempting to lure the bear into the front seat of his car behind the wheel alongside his wife and child to get a "gag" shot. Another ranger recounted the discovery of a wrecked car in a ravine with a deceased motorist inside. It was reported as a "bear-napping" gone wrong - the motorist had apparently lured the bear into the trunk of his car with food and slammed the lid shut when the animal climbed inside. The subsequent investigation revealed that the bear clawed its way through the back seat into the car and attacked the hapless "bear-napper" while travelling on one of the many hairpin curves within the park. The bear evidently fled the scene once the vehicle had reached the bottom of the ravine.

    When I was a kid in the 50's this was a normal day in Yellowstone park. We ALL fed the bears. Just break off a piece of your sandwich and hand it out the window. We never even vaguely considered that it was dangerous. Come to think of it you never heard about bears eating people back then. I guess they were all domesticated. Not like those badass bears of today! Mom would say "Aww, look at those cute little cubs"

    Ok for all you Pontiac fans here is a history lesson on 1960 models, engines, and some options. And a bunch of car shots

    1960 Catalina - (V-8) - SERIES 21
    Catalinas had plain belt line moldings, "Catalina" in script on the front fenders, and "Pontiac" in block letters on the belt latch panel. Standard features included turn signals, oil filter, five tubeless tires, and courtesy lamps on convertibles.

    1960 Pontiac Catalina Safaris came in 6- and 9-passenger versions, and a total of 35,402 Cat wagons rolled down the assembly line.

    1960 Pontiac Catalinas were hot and none more so than the Convertible, with 17,172 produced.

    Of course, if you were cruising the streets looking for stop light racing, you would have likely chosen the Catalina Sport Coupe with Tri-Power as many of the 27,496 buyers did.

    If you were a serious racer in NASCAR or NHRA, you had a 425-A Super duty in your 1960 Pontiac Catalina 2-door Sedan. The car was hot on the street and in sales with 25,504 sold.

    1960 Ventura - (V-8) - SERIES 23
    Identifying Venturas were plain belt moldings, "Ventura" in script on the front fender and "Ventura" in block letters on the trunk latch panel.
    Venturas had all Catalina features plus custom steering wheel, electric clock, DeLuxe wheel discs, full carpeting, triple-tone Morrokide seats, right-hand ash trays, and special decor moldings.

    The 1960 Pontiac Ventura line were upscale Catalinas that were yet to really catch on. Together with the Ventura Vista (not shown), they sold in good numbers with the coupe selling 27,577 and the Vista 28,700.

    1960 Star Chief - (V-8) - SERIES 24
    Star Chiefs continued to be built on the long, 124" wheelbase using the Catalina two-barrel V-8 for base power. They had Star Chief" in script on the front fender and "Star Chief" in block letters on the trunk latch panel. No aftermarket cars were built off of the Star Chief platform, although some may have had Star Chief trim.
    Star Chiefs had the same regular equipment as Venturas plus dual-speed wipers. Distinguishing touches included Star Chief front fender scripts and four stylized stars at the rear of the lower belt line moldings
    Regular equipment included all standard Catalina features plus two-speed electric wipers, DeLuxe steering wheel, electric clock, DeLuxe chrome wheel covers, and loop-pile Lurex-flexed carpeting.


    The 1960 Star Chief 4-door sedan was the best seller with 23,038 delivered.

    The 1960 Pontiac Star Chief Vista 4-door was a great value. Surprisingly, only 14,856 were made.

    The Star Chief 2-door Sport Sedan seemed a little redundant next to the Catalina version, and buyers thought so, too, with only 5,797 sold.

    1960 Bonneville - (V-8) - SERIES 27 and 28
    Pontiac's top line Bonneville was identified by "Bonneville" in script on the front fenders, "Bonneville" in block lettering on the deck latch panel, belt line moldings ending in three dashes of chrome at the rear, and a V-shaped crest on the lower front fenders.
    All Bonnevilles had rear foam seat cushions, padded dashboards with walnut face inserts, courtesy lamps, and four-barrel V-8s in addition to all standard features found in lower-priced Pontiacs. All-Morrokide seat coverings were standard, and leather was available as an option.

    What most people identify with 1960 Bonnevilles is the Sport Coupe. Well sought after back then, 24,015 were produced.

    The 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Vista 4-door was a stylish addition to the line. It was the line's largest seller at 39,037 delivered.

    The Bonneville Safari was the height of Pontiac Station Wagon style. Compared to the other wagons in the line, it was a slow seller with 5,163 made.

    - Catalina, Ventura and Star Chief Base Hydramatic Transmission V-8: Overhead valves. Cast iron block. Displacement: 389 CID. Bore and stroke: 4.0625" x 3.750". Compression ratio: 10.25:1. Horsepower: 281 @ 4400. Torque: 408 @ 2800 RPM. Five main bearings. Hydraulic valve lifters. Carburetor: Rochester 2GC two-barrel.


    - Bonneville Standard Transmission V-8 (Optional on Catalinas and Star Chiefs): Overhead valves. Cast iron block. Displacement: 389 CID. Bore and stroke: 4.0625" x 3.750". Compression ratio: 8.6:1. Horsepower: 283 @ 4400. Torque: 413 @ 2800 RPM. Five main bearings. Hydraulic valve lifters. Carburetor: Carter AFB-28205 four-barrel no. 532301.


    - Bonneville, Star Chief and Safari Hydramatic Transmission V-8 (Optional on Catalinas and Star Chiefs): Overhead valves. Cast iron block. Displacement: 389 CID. Bore and stroke: 4.0625" x 3.750". Compression ratio: 10.5:1. Horsepower: 303 @ 4600. Torque: 425 @ 2800 RPM. Five main bearings. Hydraulic valve lifters.     Powertrain Options -
    - A column shift three-speed manual transmission was standard.
    - Super Hydra-Matic (Strato-Flight) transmission was $231.34 extra.
    - A four-speed manual floor mounted transmission became available in mid-year, though not as a reg¬ular production option (R.P.O.)

    - The Tempest 66E option or '425E' two-barrel 215 horsepower economy engine was optional on all models at no extra cost, but only with Hydra-Matic.

    And remember, all of Pontiac's 1960 models were 23 ft long and 9 ft wide!

    I would love to have a '60 Pontiac. Seems like you don't see very many of them now. My dad had '60 Star Cheif and a new '66 2+2 2 door, with the 421 4barrel Turbo Hydromatic,Candy Apple Red with white bucket seats interior and lots of chrome even in the engine compartment. I wish I could find one similar to it.

    I agree. I think this was one of the best looking years for Pontiac. The'59's didn't do it for me but I know many loved them..One of my friends had a dark colored Ventura hardtop with Chrome reversed wheels and blackwalls and I really liked that combo. I personally had a '60 Olds Super 88 convertible and that is my real favorite, but I really appreciate the Pontiacs as well.
