Hello, trying to figure out how to get a non computer controlled distributor. ebay, Jegs, Summit I keep finding computer controlled. Is there a dizzy that's not required to get a computer to work?
By computer are they saying I'm going to need an ignition timing controller? Like msd timing box?
Thanks, I'm swapping this engine into a 53 bel air.

  2. Yes, they usually mean with an MSD box.

Would an HEI V8 distributor work?

Is there a way to set it up without a computer?

If you are using a Vortec long block with a carburetor, all you need is an HEI with a gear for a roller cam application.

I have a standard old GM HEI with Edelbrock intake and carb in my '40 Chevy and it works great. It is the Vortec "880" roller block.
When in doubt just call the MSD tech support help line and ask them.

Contact GMC bubba here on the HAMB.
I would think you could use a vortec carburetor intake and a HEI dist, the only thing I don't know is the dist drive gear. I used this setup on a vortec V6. I did not change tie drive gear . It's still running strong.
    Good luck

Sweet thanks you guys really do appreciate it

  9. X2, just use an HEI with the correct gear for the cam, you might be able to swap your current drive gear for the one on the new HEI.

The gear others are referring to is a melonized gear. It is recommend for roller cams. Lots of sources for it including GM.
