So i paint a portrait of Gray Baskerville about 3 or 4 years ago, a bit after the time of his death. Then i hold on to the painting and finally decide to take it to the Detroit Autorama this year to auction off during the pinstripers jamboree. I figured if anyone would know about Gray, they would be found at Detriot. My other painting, of Ed Roth, auctions off for about $675. Then the Gray Baskerville painting goes for a measily $100. Are you kidding? I am mad. I know that the money was goin to charity, but this was a pride thing. Then i met the guy who bought my painting. It was our own HAMB brother, BenD. His son is named after Gray Baskerville and it is proudly goin to hang in his room. The name of the painting, Shades of Gray, is also the name of a company Ben used to work for. Borderline creepy on the coinsidenses. As they say, it was meant to be. I was so proud to see the painting go to a good home. Just one of many good stories i am sure that came from that weekend. Just thought I'd share. Thanks Ben

Glad it went to a good home.

Let's just say the art market there is "under developed".
Gray wasn't on TV enough for them to know who he was.

There was a lot of stuff in the auction going CHEAP,so you were not alone.

HEY! That's our "Old Dad"! Nice work, man. Who will you paint next? I'd sure like a chance to bid on one of The Greek. Chris is the only guy I would call my hero.

Jeremy, I dig the big Roth paintings you did. If it makes you feel any better, I talked with BenD after he won it and I know he was thrilled to have it.

More coincidences: Ben has a brother named Jay (J bird). Just thought I'd throw that in.

    Here is Gray and Gray.

One of my all time Hot Rod heroes - B'ville would love that a fan got the painting! "Your Old Dad" is right up there with Tom McCahill and Pat Ganahl as greatest automotive writers ever, in my book.

I was there on Friday when the auction began. I recognized Gray immediately. Wonderful painting. I didn't have much patience to stand around and I figured it'd go for a hell of a lot more than $100!

  13. One thing you gotta remember Gray didn't spend a lot of time promoteing himself. He was more well known for his writting than his public personality.

If you had done a protrait of his car it probably would have been more recognized than he was just because it was what was seen.
