No, not an LS....Right now it has a 410 CI Motown small block Chev, but it had a 331 Chrylser with 4 deuces. Friday I just brought home the 392 short block Chrysler from the machine shop. .030 over Isky cam, so now I can start re-assembly, and figure out a plan to get it back in the car.

That reminds me: I need to send in my Forties Limited of Orange County membership application. They allow 39 Deluxes and 41 Commercials to join the Fordys. Your convertible is classic!

We have one as a project car, since we got it my wife has been mildly on my case about it, "rusty old pile", "it'll never be finished", "if its worth that, sell it", the usual sceptical wife comments. When my wife saw this car in the photo above, she changed her tune a bit.:D

At the Street rod nationals this year, I saw an inordinate amount of 39-40 convertibles, both in the feature areas and in the fields. I suppose they are being reproduced, in both steel and glass, I'll speculate. I favor the 39 rag, because it's top is more attractive to me. Is this a consensus opinion?

I agree, personally I like the headlights better as well. There are a lot of them coming out around here too. This one was at the Ocean Park Ford show a couple weeks ago.

I love the grill treatment on red convertible. It looks like the grill had been painted, and then the front leading edge polished, or the front, leading edge had been masked of during painting. I have seen this treatment from time to time through the years and it is always becoming!

Lou, I was just reading in an old (1976) Special Interest Auto magazine an article about a stock 4o ford sedan delivery. It said in there that ford used 40 deluxe sheet metal on the 40 SD. The 41 SD used 40 STANDARD sheet metal on the front. Do you, or another 40 fanatic, have a picture of a 41 SD with the correct 40 standard sheet metal.I want to see if it is really 40 standard, or 41 pick up front sheet metal. Sedan Deliveries were considered commercial vehicles.

  18. I would trade off several things for a 39 'vert!

Anybody have a pic of one that has a full trunk lid conversion, like a 40? Might be a task, but sure would yield a nice car. Seems like there used to be a glass body made.
    Gibbon? Wescott?

  19. I think the sedan delivery did use car sheetmetal but the panel delivery used truck sheetmetal as far as I know. 1941-ford-sedan-delivery_3015156.jpg

That is what I suspected, Don! They used 41 pick up trim. Now that I re-think it the mag was right. Ford used 40 standard/PU sheet metal. But they didn't mention the use of 41 PU trim. You can't go wrong any way you go. I know of a guy that use 40 deluxe sheet metal on his 41 SD. 40 standard trim would look great as well.

The 39 grills are made from stamped steel. The trim on the front of the grill are stainless strips heldo on by small clips.

This 39 was built by Steve's Auto restorations in Portland I believe the build up can be seen http://www.realsteel.com/projects/1939-ford-convertible/

I don't know about Gibbons but Wescott still offers the 39 bodies. My Wescott 39 was built before 1990 and is still holding up well.

I went on a long-winded rant about it earlier, that green one from Steves Auto Restoration has the BEST top I have seen on a '39 Convert.

I finally took some photos of the 40 convertible I drug home a few months ago.
I haven't touched it... It's an old hot rod from the 60's maybe? I'm not for sure.
The fenders have been leaded in, it has a drivetrain out of a 57 chevy and early mustang seats.
Not for sure what the plan is yet...
Oh yeah, I found it right here on the H.A.M.B. in the classifieds.

Looks like a great place to start. Hope you settle on a plan and get that convertible on the road ASAP!
