I just installed a power disc brake kit on my 55. I was talking to a friend of mine and he told me that it was necessary to drill a hole 1inch under the factory rod hole on the brake pedal so that the rod that goes to the master cylinder lines up correctly. Is this true? -Cory
Anyone? The brakes are better than drums, but do not compare to any of the other cars I have with power disc brakes using stock parts. I think this might be the reason, I was just curious if anyone else did this swap, and if you drilled that hole -Cory
The lower hole is for LESS leverage. You need less with power brakes, until they fail of course. I wouldn't bother. Alignment has nothing to do with it.
The other reason is to get full travel from the master cylinder....if the pedal hits the floor before the master cylinder bottoms out, then you've pretty much disabled the dual master cylinder feature. If one side of the hydraulics goes out the pedal will hit the floor before it activates the other side. I suggest you drill the hole and move the linkage down, but as he said expect it to give you less leverage, so it will be harder to push the pedal when power is not working.
I have power discs on my 55, the instructions said to drill a hole 1 inch lower. I did and they work fine. I had no trouble with the manual disc brakes , but my wife couldn't stop the car. Carlg
I just have manual discs on my 55 so I don't know but I would go by the instructions if they say drill a hole 1 inch lower then do it.
My kit came with generic instructions. But it is the same kit as all the others so I will just drill the hole. Thanks for the help guys -Cory
