Yea I didn't know choppers weren't allowed. I do now. Next on the list for the desoto is figuring out what (and how) to do with the bumper. I've already moved it in closer to the body... Now I gotta make the body fit the bumper. Im gonna mold/french it into the car (Somehow) and on both sides. It's gonna be a big project. I'm nervous to be honest.

Glad you're still posting. I missed the first pics of Asher's bike. Glad you were able to work it back in. Nice scoot. Keep up the good work - I like the originality.

  6. I was enjoying the thread about chopping the DeSoto. It's too bad this thread is now about something else.

The OP claims that he didn't know choppers weren't allowed here? I think he knows this now. A mod deleted the bike pic, so he posted it again in front of the car and then says he wont post anymore? We are 30 or more posts after and still talking about the bike. Maybe a mod can do a cleanup of the thread?

I'm sure there are many here who would like to see the thread get back on topic, the OP is doing a GREAT job and I want to see more.

Because a thread has never, ever chased a squirrel or two on the HAMB. I'm guessing this will get back around to cutting up a perfectly good DeSoto as soon as the OP gets done earning a living.

In the mean time... I appreciate the bump. I got to see the choppah!

You aren't in any trouble, just keep the project pic/updates coming. We need a good custom thread and yours fits the bill. You have 65 thousand views in 3 months, if this isn't proof we like it I dont know what is. :)

Back to the car are you thinking you'll French it in all the way around or just the top splash pan area?

I feel like the hard part will be figuring out what to do to it and the doing it won't be nearly so intimidating

Thank you. My son makes me proud regardless of who sees his work. He just isn't old enough yet to build a car :)

Here's a top view. I'd like to make the car body fit the shape of the bumper. Then I'm thinking cutting the roll pan and everything on the bottom off. I've never attempted this before, or seen it done. I'm not really sure how to tackle it. I don't think I want the body to over lap the bumper, but sit right up next to it. On the sides too.
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! 20160921_114703.jpg

Gotcha. Find @xderelict build on his 54 Chevy custom -rip- and see how he did his modifications. He used a lot of round tube framing and then fleshed them out.

I'd get a fat solid rod and bend it to match the bumper, clamp that in place, make a cardboard template of the gap and make that out of sheet metal and tack it to the rod.

Then take it off the car and weld it up and either weld on a flange or if you change up the steps a little use a shrinker/ stretcher to bend the back edge into your shaped flange.

Then that flang bolts on or I guess if it's all one piece you could weld that on or make the rod go all the way around and weld that onto the body? Figure the rod gives you a nice edge and should make it nice and ridged.

    Just thinking out loud.

You could cut it and re-weld behind the guards to hide the joints and not have to re-chrome. Maybe make a template of the outside shape of the bumper and hold it against the quarter to see how the shape matches up. Perhaps the big flare away from the body now at the front sides won't matter and the outside edge will fit the shape of the quarter just fine.

If it were mine, I think I'd recess the front of the sides in about an inch or inch and a half and let the bumper stand out a couple inches from flush. Just set it in a pocket with about 3/8 or 1/2" all around it. An idea anyway.

Good that you're proud of your kid and cool bike, but they like to stay on topic around here. March on , my friend.

If you bring the body out to the bumper, leave room between the body and the bumper for the bumper to slide into and not hit the body if it ever gets bumped into. Long sentence, hope it made sense. Another words make a pocket in front of the rear bumper for the bumper to slide into without hitting the body.

Makes perfect sense. That was one of my concerns.

Hey, I absolutely LOVE the Desoto build! (love the bike, too!) Its just that if you are going to introduce other stuff the thread should be titled " Some of the work from my shop" or something like that.
The garage journal has this problem in spades, You click on a garage build and most of it is the posters' other projects. I don't even go to the garage gallery section anymore.

Its going to be a work of art! You are a true artist.
Did you ever think about doing away with the bumper and finishing it out with your own artistic metalwork?

Is there a way you can tag me in the build so I can read it? Thank you

This build is a good read, very nice work! I keep trying to imagine what it would look like with a mild cutaway door like a Kaiser Darrin since it is forever topless. Probably weird.
Anyway, nice to see you having such a great time. Over the years I have heard so many people tell me "Man, how do you do that? I could NEVER do that!" where I have always looked at something I have no idea how to do and said " I can do that, I'll figure a way". That and not being afraid to fuck something up is how things are learned. Meeting personal challenges, figuring a way to do what seems impossible is very gratifying. Obviously, you have the gift.
Wish you were closer, I could hook you up with a giant old tig setup!
    Carry on.
    Matt
