Hi guys, I just drove my Bel air for the first time most of today and it drives pretty good. It needs some suspension work, and the steering box needs to be replaced, but other than that she doesn't drive that bad at all. After cruising around for awhile, I came back to my place and when I put it in second I heard a serious clank clank clank. I thought something was under the car, and obviously nothing. I drove it for another 20 seconds and when I put it in reverse it was extremely slow and made that clanking noise. After a couple of minutes trying to maneuver her into the garage (the car that is) she finally made it and it seems I no longer had reverse. Every time I put it into reverse it made serious noise. Luckily this happened in front of my house. The person I bought the vehicle from was very nervous when concerning the clutch, so that was the first thing that popped into mind. Could this be anything else? I narrowed it down to either the rear end or the clutch, hoping it was the clutch. The car has a saginaw 4 speed just in case you were wondering. Any comments, suggestions? Does this sound like a clutch going out. Oh yeah, there was also the smell of something burning, but faint. -Cory
clutch going out would be the only thing for it not to move in gear. check the u-joints when they are about to fall out makes a clank clank noise.
Ok, now that I had some time, I went under the car and checked the U-Joints. They seem good, there is also no play in the driveshaft. Further investigation lead me to see some manual transmission fluid was leaking. I fired up the car and did a test to see if the car had reverse. All gears work correctly, about the time it got out of the garage, I saw fluid leaking onto the pavement. Would low fluid indicate the "clunking noise" that I mentioned earlier? Comments/suggestions? -Cory
"Also, is there anyway to "top" these off?" yes, plug on the side 2/3 up, p*** side, open it up and top it off. Might as well change the fluid, then if you see sparkly black funk, you know it needs service. "All gears work correctly," Check for a bent fork, loose shifter rod. rebuilds are easy on old 4 speeds, cheap too.
