Hot Rods Spray Painting Blanket Insulation with Foil Cover

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldguard, Sep 28, 2016.

  1. Has anyone top coated the foil coating of the blanket insulation after install so it does not look like a NASA project inside the car? I would like to make it black and I realize they now sale in some brands a black mat but I had the bright stuff and under the dash where the rubber mat does not cover it, it will look like *** I think. Any ideas on what will stick? Maybe treat it like a alloy surface and use a zinc chromate primer first?

I think I'd buy some cheap fabric and glue it to the insulation in the areas it shows up. I don't know if any paint would stick, try rattle can and see.

What I did, above the carpet/mat on a 32 Ford:

A friend gave me a big roll of what I would say, is black felt cloth about 1/8" to 3/16" thick. I used 3M spray adhesive on the foil and felt, and it's perfect. The flat black color blends right into the black carpet on tunnel, and the rubber mats.

This"felt" was easy to conform to the angles/dips in the firewall with no wrinkles that can be seen.

I had some small areas showing past the carpet at the firewall in my 51 Chevy just little areas but it bugged me. I just took a black sharpie and got down there and colored it in. worked pretty good. don't know how long it will last but it doesn't bug me like it used to.

  10. Yes it's the little things that bug us! Most won't notice but I will.
The fabric thing seems like a good solution. Jimmy, I have not talked to Donnie but I will and relay his thoughts. I had thought about a spray rubber as it would be flexible and some say safe to glue to.

I would try a vinyl and fabric dye.

Simple spray can of flat black. It sticks to everything else I don't want it to. It will be fine.

  13. Well I tried a few of the ideas suggested here on a s**** piece of insulation, I will report back soon on the testing.

I did a test spray with the rattle can bed liner and it stuck fine. The seat and floor boards are out of my '39 and I'll be installing the stick on insulation this weekend so I'll be able to report on the real install shortly.

After a while, the reflective silver wears off to a dull gray, almost white. Gene

I used peel and stick insulation from Lowes. Backing on it was silver, painted it all with spray on black bedliner. Has been on it for 6 years. Looks great and has stayed. I think you could touch it up if need be.
