It seemed to rain all week. By the time Saturday got here, we decided not to make the trip. If you were there, how was it? I am looking forward to Hershey and this week's weather looks a bit better, in spite f the hurricane.
I missed it also. It was supposed to clear up Sat. and I believe it did up there but it was still pouring down here.
When I looked last night, they changed the timing, because it slowed to a crawl? So it can't get that far north during next week?
I went up on Friday and it was pretty muddy and rained on and off the whole time. A lot of vendors had their stuff covered with tarps so you couldn't see much. But I would say the turnout was still pretty good all things considered. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Eastern weather. Always a **** shoot. No rain for weeks, then things started to **** Wednesday and continued to **** all week. Some vendors really count on this event to keep the books in the green. This may factor heavily into "Carlisle is dying''. That ****s, too.
We were there Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Foot traffic was very light. Several empty spaces near ours. Sitting in a Motorhome watching TV was not what we had planned as the forecast kept calling for flooding conditions and rain into the weekend so we packed up and headed home Thursday.
That is pretty shocking to me as I recall the early years when it was so popular and crowded, and some years later, illegal sales of swap space rights were thousands of dollars. Just seems impossible in a way, by remembering the past. Many younger people here probably don't now why Carlisle was created and did so well, even the very first time: That was due to the enforced 25 year old or older rule at Hershey, for show cars and parts sales. Carlisle was started by two guys that were into 57? Chevys and those were too new to be accepted by rules at Hershey. That is amazing to comprehend....time sure does fly. . .
I swam a few laps on Friday. Bought some supplys that I needed. Found a tire iron for my manual tire machine that I had been searching for many years. Guess it was worth it! Onto Hershey for more stuff I cant live without. Oldmics
Sadly, along with the obvious effect of internet sales, Carlisle has slowly become it's own worst enemy. By adding all of the subordinate events, the main events have become diluted to a degree. I mean you have MoPars at Carlisle, Fords, GM, Trucks, Motorcycles, Foreign Car, Vettes and probably some I've forgotten. If I'm going to look for or sell Ford stuff, why not just go to the event with the "targeted" audience? I do miss the "old" Carlisle but in some respects it has become more of a social event than anything else. The quality of cars in the car corral (always one of my favorite sections) has been going downhill for many years. And on the subject of hills, my old body struggles anymore to even climb the hill of the car corral much less try to cover as much of the facility as possible.......This getting old thing is not for the faint- hearted.
isn't it crazy to know that they were the "Late Model Guys" back then. LOL The new 72 daily driver I drove to Hershey in 72, has long been eligible for showing there....for a .. l-o-n-g time now... .
I do not go to Carlisle anymore. Hershey is one million times better, and only 10 min drive for me. A lot of the guys at carlisle used to pack up sunday and swing into Hershey. Some may still be doing that now.
Someone once told me that if you walked each row at Carlisle you would walk 14 miles. There was a time when my friends and I did just that. But I fear those days are now past. Like you say ........This getting old is not for sissies!
Yeah, we still walk 11 or 12 on a pedometer. I would feel really badly about missing the Carlisle of 15 years ago, but not so much today. As has been said, too many specific events, too many non-car related vendors and too much money for a display space have diminished this once great event to a Maybe.
I can remember the guys that would buy at Carlisle and sell it at Hershey with a considerable mark up. I did not make Carlisle at all this year but plan on going next spring. That is if life would stop getting in the way of course.
