Hello everybody, I'm a newbe, be gentle.... just acquired a 1946 Dodge Pickup cab & frame, I plan on building a #unmentionable style rod out of it. Is there a simple conversion ( aka cheeper way out ) for the front windshield & trim? Im making a rat but want the front windshield & trim to have a stock style appearance. Dont want to hunt down a high dollar original, any info would be great thanks

  2. I strongly urge you to read up on the rules here, you uttered a very despised phrase around these parts. Rat Rods are not even in the peripheral vision of the focus of this forum...To answer your question, check gl*** shops that specialize in custom vehicles, original would probably be the easiest and most cost effective way.

The 46 Dodge had 2 pieces of flat gl*** installed into a one piece frame. Weld closed the hinge and latch holes, grind flat, have a local gl*** company cut 2 pieces of new safety gl***, and bond that gl*** to the cab, or find a high dollar windshield frame, hinges and functioning latch. Flat gl***, any local gl*** shop can cut new windows and it is not expensive. If the original frame is gone it is possible to glue new gl*** into the hole with urethane.

Cover the whole cab in wet concrete, wipe away the areas that you want to see out of. Imbed some skulls above the windshield and doors while the concrete is still wet. Winner winner at the local rat rod show.

Read the rules. No rat rod talk here. Sorry. I strongly recommend you edit your posts so you don't get shut down

Sometimes you have to spend money and it's cheaper to pay the money and making it right. "Cheaper" can come back and haunt you when you least expect it.

Dude, if $300 is too much to be safe and get it done, then you are in for a surprise when you start fixing everything else.

There is the conversion kit for your truck to replace the crank out frame ($200) and the safety gl*** ($100)

Also, I'm going to ***ume that by "rat rod" you really mean "funky old truck with some cool patina". Feel free to cut and paste that and insert into your posts, and you'll be fine here, lots of people have rides like that here, it's just terminology.

But they are pretty old school and dislike the more radical side of That scene. They like "rat rods" about as much as my dad liked "Never Mind The ********" by the *** Pistols when me and my sister went to Sunday M*** with Mohawks and Safety pins in our noses...that went over really well....

$300 is short money, saw original equipment style / o.e. metal frame go for $800 with no gl***. Definitely appreciate the info.

Yeah, I think the conversion kit sounds like a great idea, totally worth it. The good thing is that the other listing for the gl*** is probably custom cut so they can make whatever you need for the kit, just make sure you order the right gl***.

I really like ratty cars too. But this place is really all about old school stuff, which I like even more, plus a lot of that stuff overlaps. This is a really good site with a lot of cool and helpful people, ya just gotta roll with the punches, lot's of sarcasm here, (from me at least), don't worry just be respectful of their house and your good!

Post pics of your truck as you go, let us know how that kit works, it would be good info for others in the same situation.

Certainly dont mean to offend anyone... building a 46 Dodge cab on a streached 32 model A frame chaneling cab, 32 rad shell, 4" dropped I beam, small block chevy, three speed stick. 9" rear maybe so mabe a cool Frankenstein rod? Appreciate the positive vibes. Also my profession is metal fab, cad design & run a 4kw laser. Pretty much can fab up anything.

Thanks to all for the info, didn't know about the conversation kit on ebay. Should have looked there but I wanted experienced input. Previously only worked on cars 1970's & up.

This is an old post but I'm hoping someone can shed some light on the V **** Windshield Conversion Kit shown above by Clunker. I ask because I've chopped my 41 Dodge truck and I'm trying to decide if I want to bond the gl*** in and some how reattach the frame or rebuild the whole overhead section and restore it back to hinged. The whole overhead area was rotted out and I removed it. I have the skills to fab a new one but am worried about getting it water tight ect. Thanks for any thoughts

I've had way better luck getting windows water tight by bonding the gl*** in rather then putting in with rubber gaskets.
The gl*** guy says he needs about a 1/2" flat area for the gl*** to sit in. Then he puts down a large bead of urethane and sets the gl***. He finishes off with a smooth edge around the gl*** on the sheet metal.

My coupe just got a new rear window frame, new gl***, and new rubber. It sat out in the rain the last 4 days. It has more leaks with the new rust free window frame, new rubber gaskets and the new gl*** then it had with the original 48 rusted through window frame, hard as a rock rubber gasket and the old separating gl***! I have to seal it with urethane, so why did I just spend the $100 for the new rubber? Only because I got the gl*** cut for the original opening. If I would have made a wood template for the oversized gl*** and had it bonded in, I would have been done with it.

You did a chop, the gl*** will have to be custom cut anyway. Make sure you have a nice flat e 1/2" edge for the gl*** to sit on, make a center post, cut a pattern from cardboard, transfer that to wood or hard plastic (make sure it fits!), and have a local gl*** shop that does truck gl*** cut your safety gl*** and bond the gl*** in.
