Guys I am looking for advice. I have a 51 chevy truck and I need to put power steering on it so my wife can drive. I have looked at a lot of stuff. I need to know from you guys that have done this what is the best way. I have seen kits from places like ccp that have a box that bolts where the factory box is and I have also looked at rack and pinion. The truck is stock suspension in the front. I would like to keep it that way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
huh, my wife can drive my truck with manual steering. But then, she's been driving her Dart with manual steering for 36 years. Be careful when shopping for power steering...there are some kits that have lousy geometry. I think the CCP kit falls into this category...the steering arm is way short, etc. Do some searching on the internet and see if you find more happy customers, than angry customers, etc. Borgeson makes some good stuff...but they apparently haven't yet figured out how to make a power steering box for these old trucks. That tells me something. Rack and pinion and a straight axle is NOT something that usually works out well. I have a Camaro clip in my 57 suburban, the power steering works fine. I have manual in all my other old rides, and some of them are easier to drive than others. A large steering wheel, and skinny front tires, along with repairing/maintaining the steering and suspension, helps a lot.
Check out the stovebolt site. People there are all about AD trucks. A Toyota PS box comes to mind. A search there should give you a lot of hits...............Al
