Spalding Flame Thrower - streetable? Parts?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by scootermcrad, Jun 27, 2008.

  1. I have about 5 guys right now that are interested in a few pairs. I keep a list so if you would like to be on it, just PM me and give me your email address and I'll add you.

I just had lunch with my mold makers this week and we revisited this project. He may be able to bring the cost down a little bit since he bought some new molding machines, but still too much for me at this point.

I think we're going to try reproducing the W&H DuCoil rotor first. They are easier to make and I'm pretty sure more guys are running W&H DuCoils than flamethrowers. :)

Lets just say we agree to disagree. I have plenty of old school junk laying around that I have taken off cars I built most of whihc were replaced by newer better stuff. Sure you can get a dist. with point to run great I do it every day, but your replacing those points sooner then you would like to. With the newer HEI stuff you set it and forget it. If old stuff was the only way to go then everyone would still be running Flatheads. Not that I wana get bashed by the flatty guys. I had a flatty with Arden Heads and 6x2 stromberg 97's on a 49 Merc. Looked cool as **** and ran pretty damed good too but it was still a flathead didn't make half the power a small block chevy did at half the cost. I had in my hand the other day a brand new Stromberg 97 thats going on a 56 Ford with a 321 Y block, The price of cool these days is over $450.00 for a stinking 2 barrel carb. Why because they improved it. I buy Knucklehead Harley motors from S&S cycle and from a guy in Sweden that actually run and make big horse power and don't leak oil all over the friggn place, they are a hell of a lot of money why because they are improved.
Hey if your happy runnign old stuff more power to you, I had ok experiences with my two flame thrower ignitions but when I broke down and was left stranded that was enough to change my mind. If I was a few miles from home chances are I would have never changed out the dist. Would have hunted down parts in Hemming for weeks until I found what I needed. FYI this was pre-internet days. You like drum brakes cool good for you.
I had a 68 Plymouth Fury III 383 factory 4 speed car with 4 monster drum brakes on it. It didn't stop all that bad until one night driving back from the Good guys nationals in NY state some ****head cut me off and when I mashed the brake pedal down good old brake fad away from water in the drums Disc brakes don't do that do they.
You build what you like to build and I build what I like to build but there is no arguing with progress. Most new things in this hobby have been invented or improved by car guys who are always about making their cars faster, handle better, stop better and just better all around. That's what made the hobby what it is today not a bunch of guys runnning flathead 4 cylinders like Henry Ford raced.
All that **** being said what ever you and I build will be a hell of a lot cooler then anything that comes out of Detroit these days ( with a new Corvette being the one exception)

Hello, does anyone happen to have a SPALDING decal or a photo of one! There were at least 2 versions made. The version I am looking for would be a black oval with a red distributor and a flame. The word "SPALDING" is above the oval.
    Thanks for any help.

This is one time that I will buy the "rare" thing. Unless you are looking at some Ponitiac racers museum collection of old parts they raced with back in the day you will never see another one.
