I found this car one eBay. I made the guy an offer for less money for the car. He messages me back and says "yes. Come get it". [IMG] The best morning, he then messages me his phone number to call him. I call him and he tells me that he gets off work at 5 and he would call me between 3 and 4 to let me know what time he will be home for me to look at the car. 4:00 rolls around and he don't call. 5:00 rolls around and still no call, so I shoot him a text and he says that he gets off work at 5:45 and can have the car ready by 6:30. The car is an hour and a half away from me. I get about halfway there and he said he would be a little later than he thought but should still get there before me. Then he calls me 30 minutes before I get there and asks me where I am and that he is almost back to his house. Then I get 15 minutes away and he calls and says that his brother just got sent to the emergency room and that he couldn't sell us the car.
I also found it weird that the car was listed in one town but then he says it's in another town. If anyone is looking at this car, beware of this seller.

What do you guys think? Could the guy not have even had the car? It doesn't sound like he was telling the truth, but who knows, maybe he was. Close to me getting there he asked If I had a money marker.

It's possible that it's legit. I've run across some really dis-organized people when trying to buy/sell. If you try again, take a buddy with you. SEE the car and the ***le before you give up the cash. I guess the marker deal is to check for counterfeit bills?? Tim

My dad was with me when we went. It did sound kinda off. He didn't have a ***le. Mississippi didn't start issueing ***les until 1976. I tried to get a ***le for my 1949 ford truck and they said I had to have two different bills of sales but I didn't need need a ***le, just a tag and they sold me a tag. I won't be going back after the car.

If it was an honest person with an honest deal...he'll likely get back in touch with you.
If not , your summation is appropriate.

You should always look closely at feedback before proceeding, especially when someone only has a few sales.

    From the ad;
    "Never been raced,
Little old lady only drove it to church on Sundays"

    Yeah right!
I bet the guy drinks a lot and kept puting you off from the Bar all afternoon. Feedback pretty much proves he's a flake. Keep looking.

Just my opinion, but unless you're getting it for substantially less than the buy it now price, it's not that good of a deal for that body. I'm ***uming you're mainly after the body for a Hot Rod project and will be trying to unload the stock Model A parts (which usually don't go for much) on a restorer.

Try again. Bring someone big and mean with you. I would be fascinated to find out the scoop. It's really bizarre that he would try some scam face to face, based on his ebay feedback. Hmmmm

It's weird I never worried about meeting people for a face to face transaction until I heard about the couple that was murdered trying to buy a mustang off Craigslist a little while back. They were robbed then shot.
Maybe you dodged a bullet. Litereally.

At this point you can't be sure if it is legit or not, but the fact that he kept in contact via phone lends some sort of credibility.
I also agree, before bidding on anything check their feedback, still not failsafe.
Possibly wait for the fire sale.

Does it strike anyone as odd that the digits in the posted price for this car are 5, 4, 3, 2 , 1 ,0?

I drove by there just to see what we there and there wasn't much there and the houses that were there didn't appear to have too much room between the tree line and the road. I later looked on eBay and his pictures don't seem to match the area. It's very strange.

Something weird about the roof on that car. BTW I was able to erase some of the blacked out background areas of the photo.

The ole flake-meter bounces pretty good on this one.
I had a guy back in the 70s do me similar on a '63 Belair. Made the 2hr drive to his house, no show. The car was there and a total POS. I was visibly pissed. Wifey says he worked over, be here soon. I waited an hour and a half, still a no show. All the while wifey peaking occasionally from behind the curtains. Probably best he never did show....
    Waiting their turn....

Long story but a few years back I found myself on the border of Compton and long beach in a dirt lot gated with 3k in my pocket trying to buy a c-10 at 10pm ... All kinds of wierd stuff was happening , all of the sudden I realized this is REALLY dumb ...people have been killed for 20 bucks ! when the guy wasn't looking I bolted.... Trust your gut it may save your life

It's actually rather uncanny how many times I've been blown off on internet deals with some sort of medical/death in the family type of thing. It has been A LOT.

We lost a deal that way when we were house shopping, We had gone back and forth a bit, seemed like we had agreed on a price, I figured next communication would be that we had a deal. All of a sudden my realtor stopped hearing from the other side, had no idea what was going on. We found out a few days later the poor woman had a m***ive stroke.
