These pictures are from my late father's collection and since I wasn't around then, I can't tell you much. I do know they were all taken in '68 and I believe the location is Ubly, MI or Tri City Dragway in Saginaw. Maybe some local HAMBers can verify this. In any case, I feel they're worth sharing. I have more, if you like.
Tace, awesome pictures! love the old style photos. also love gassers.thanks for sharing them.your dad would be proud.did he race a gasser? take care... dennis
Great pics. I have to scan in some of mine. I think I have some with a FLAG starter from Island Dragway, NJ. Bill
Great to see the old pictures of Tri-city Dragway. If your dad had taken a complete set for the day you would have caught me somewhere. I only missed a couple of days that the track was open during its history. He has managed to capture a typical cross section of the competition. I don't see any of the heavy hitters out of the Detreoit area so it was probably just a typical race day. Gassers out of Ohio and the local guys were always on hand. You have to realize that when this strip opened it enjoyed the reputation as the second best strip in the country construction wise. It was built strictly by the N.H.R.A. blueprint. Many competitors came here to test and tune for Indy. You could leave Tri-City and unload at Indy and run within a couple of hundreths right off the trailer. It was amazing how close the two tracks would duplicate. Frank
Very cool. Glad to see more racing stuff on this site. I am a FNG and will have some vintage pics up soon.. May dig up some of my old man racing boats
Here's a newspaper clipping from about 1969 at Grandbend Dragway which was right across the lake from Tri City. Good old Ohio George against our old favorite Ontario George!! Great photo's everyone.........hope to see more!!
Here's some more pictures. Taken again at Tri-City but in the early to mid-seventies. Obviously all are not gassers but I loved the era when funny cars still resembled cars instead of space shuttles. Anyone know when and why Tri-City closed? Where was it exactly? Freeland near the airport? Enjoy.
Yeah, now were talkin'. Kick ass! That Willy's is getting some air and I love the altered wheelbase Comet. It's nice to see you guys chipping in. Since I wasn't there when my pics were taken, I'd love to hear some of the stories behind the pics. You know, the track, the rivalries, the parties, etc. This stuff is too cool to let it rot in a box in the basement.
