the switch itself looks more like this, right? but the lock cylinder should look like the one pictured above.
Ok some progress..thanks to all here!. So poured some gas in carb..ran gas line to a can. Put screwdriver in cylinder and one turn.. voila! I hear a fan running inside cab. Seems that white switch is for some sort of fan or defroster? Crank it and it fires! But dies in about 3 seconds. Sure seems like fuel pump is not delivering gas as i pull off hose and it is dry. Added a clear fuel filter before the fuel pump and its dry. After about 20 tries to get it going i do see some fuel in the filter now..but probably not nearly enough to get to carb. So now.. anyone mind telling me where i stand. My ***umption is that the fuel pump is weak or bad since it is not delivering gas to the carb. Anything i can do to help it along or test further so i can get this truck actually running. Stupid question #2 - i ***ume the gas can should be lower than the fuel pump or at least even... Kind of dont get why its not working (obviously if bad I get it) but old owner said it worked well. Is it because the motor is not running long enough for the fuel pump to deliver gas (mechanical) to carb? If so how do i keep it running..continue to pour gas into carb? What am i doing wrong. thanks
It will take a little while for the pump to fill the bowl of the carb. You can keep putting a squirt of gas down the throat, and after a few runs it should be delivering gas to the carb. If not, take off the air cleaner and look down into the carb, give the throttle a pull, and see if you get a squirt of gas into the throat. If you do, gas is getting there, if you dont, go back to your pump. The pump will **** uphill, so the fuel supply does not have to be anywhere special. A fuel can down by the pump is Ok. Or you can rule out your fuel pump problem by inserting an electric pump in it's place while you trouble shoot.
get nothing ever squirting into carb when pulling on throttle. tried about 20 times.. it runs every time for 3 seconds. go back to fuel line and dry. Only after i ran out of time did i see fuel filter about halfway full... can try again but pulling on throttle/pumping gas pedal really seems to do nothing. Can i somehow help it along?
Take a fuel container that fuel can flow out of the bottom and put it higher than the carb. Then you don't need a fuel pump. Gary
good idea... anyone have one rigged up ? will try with a bottle or something and try to get it not to leak lol
You should check your fuel lines and hoses to make sure they are not compromised (think of ****ing pepsi through a cracked straw.) I am ***uming there's a rubber hose between the gas tank and hard fuel line? This is where you insert a 6v universal fuel pump. fairly strait forward to install. If you are in a hurry, you probably can just get a 12v one from local parts store and wire it to a 12v battery. This should supply fuel to your carb whether the mechanical fuel pump is functioning or not. You should see the gl*** bowl fill up. Watch the carb without an air cleaner to make sure floats are working, fittings aren't leaking. If your lines/hoses are compromised, this will probably reveal that as well. If it fires up and runs, you know the carb functions at least. The carb might need going through, and you may need a new mechanical fuel pump. I just run an electric one anyway, takes care of a lot of issues all at once. Edit: just saw the above post, great idea, an IV bag for your car. Try that 1st.
no need to get an electric pump...get a new mechanical pump, they do get tired when they get old, and sitting around half full of bad gas, not being used, is really hard on them.
and once you get some fuel into the carb, the accelerator pump should work, which is the gizmo that shoots some gas when you push the gas pedal. If it does not work, then you might want to get a carb kit, and maybe fix the carb. But first, make sure it's getting fuel to the carb. And some times it takes a while for an old leather accelerator pump to start working again, if that's what it has.
ret It's pretty obvious that someone in the past popped the cylinder out either with a slide hammer and screw or beat on it until they got it out. Expanding the photo shows they pried it out and broke the housing. Most likely you can use a screw driver of the right size to turn the switch on. Look in the hole and you should see a hole that the end of the lock cylinder goes in. Looking at this http://www.cl***icparts.com/1947-53-Ignition-Switch-Original-Style/productinfo/53-405/#.WADv4iTSvSE The actual switch may not be as beat up as it looked at first but you will have to look at it closer and decide that. The lock cylinder is supposed to fit up to 66 pickups so it may be available locally at a parts house. http://www.cl***icparts.com/1947-66-Ignition-Switch-Cylinder-w_Key/productinfo/53-475/#.WADwqiTSvSE Here, O'reilly's gives you four choices from dirt cheap to Delco for 16 bucks. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/s...65&make=Chevrolet&model=C10+Pickup&vi=1322682 If it doesn't look like they mangled the housing of the switch it's self so the cylinder won't stay in it I'd pick one up and go from there.
I bought a 55 Chevy once that would only run about a minute then die. 5 mins later it would start again run for a few secs and die again....this was the problem...check to see if the metal line from the fuel pump to the carb has a short section of rubber hose, usually right at the carb inlet. Check to make sure there is not a rubber flapper inside the hose. This one would lay down when pump pressure went away, and slowly fill the fuel bowl, but when you started the engine the fuel flow would lift the flapper and plug the line and engine would soon run out of fuel. Let it sit for a minute and the flap would lay back down and the whole cycle would repeat itself. The steel fuel line had been cut with a hacksaw leaving a sharp edge and when he pushed the hose on it cut into the rubber and created, in effect a hinged flap. Great thing about it was, the guy I bought it from, back in 68 was sick of working on it and sold me a 55 Chevy 2dr hardtop for $25.00 and all it took was a 50 cent piece of rubber hose and we drove the car for 2 years before selling it to my cousin.
