Hi Guys I am sure this would have come up before but can anyone tell me if it is possible to convert 40 Ford brakes [I have good back plates & hubs] to take the Lincoln style self energising shoe design or will I have to buy Lincoln back plates too
    cheers Mike
oh any pictures of a conversion would be useful

This has been covered several times. Try google to search the hamb or look at B***kustoms picture and do it yourself. Add the self adjusters too

    Thanks Guys
Brian your parts look fantastic & I have admired your work on bikes & cars over the years but as I am in uk it is not a cost effective option for me & I would like to do the conversion myself, I ***umed it could be done & that someone else would have done it before me so at least I now know
As you say Manyolcars more time on google 1st

I did it back about 1990. I used the 46-48 backing plates as they have the supports for the shoes. I made a bottom pocket for clearance for the later bottom adjuster. I would now use a wheel cylinder that has a hole for the top post. It alligns and spaces everything easily. Think 64 Chevy etc. You could use the Chevy style post and put a nut on it instead of screwing it into the spindle. You probably would want to slot the backing plate so the top post could move to get good shoe contact.
The pic is with Buick shoes, Chevy adjusters, and truck wheel cylinders.

I used '48-'52 F-2 (3/4 ton truck) backing plates coupled with Buick 45 fin drums, hubs from the guy in Flower Mound, Texas who sells Lincoln backing plates, and with a little help from a machinist, I have real Buick drums with 12" brakes against the Ford backing plates for a lot less money. Occasionally, one of those Fords would end up with the old style brakes/backing plates, so identify the brakes before you unbolt and buy.
