I see adds from Eastwood and others about Cadmium plating small parts. I have a lot of little underhood pieces and brackets I would like to do.Does it work? Is it cheaper than loading up a bucket full of stuff and carting it to a plater? Thanks
I've had a couple buckets full of stuff done in white zinc at this place: http://www.barrettplating.com/ It's been a few years, but they did everything I could fit in a five gallon bucket for around $65. This is a twirling basket-full dip, not a hooked dip. I usually did small brackets, gauge buckets, and bolts. Stuff comes out looking like a brand new hardware store bolt. I did all my own stripping and cleaning beforehand in my blasting cabinet.
With Cadmium being as deadly as it is when exposed to welding heat, I don't think I would have anything to do with it. Even if I wasn't going to weld the plated parts. The risk from electroplating is low however Cadmium itself is nasty stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadmium_poisoning
I love the look of Eastwood's Silver Cad spray paint, but it clogs up the can almost as soon as you start using it. I've put the can in the paint shaker, let the ball rattle for many minutes while I clean the plastic tip and yet it still clogs up. There's more than one almost full can sitting in the shop.
Go see a local plater, sometimes they'll toss in odd parts with a bigger batch for a better lot charge.
