Hey guys how's it going, I have a Plymouth Special Deluxe that I recently converted to a 12 volt system. Or so I thought! I seem to be having trouble getting the alternator to charge the battery. The car turns over and starts on the first shot, but as soon as the battery is disconnected the car dies. Or after about 15 min of it running the engine dies. Any help is much appreciated, just not sure where I screwed up. Thank you!

  2. i ***ume your charging system is not charging.... without knowing how you wired your car and what components you used it would be a just a guess

Yeah that's the mystery, now I'm trying to troubleshoot, do I need to swap it from positive ground to negative?

What sort of alternator is it? You will need to excite the alt to get it to charge. The wire that goes to the dash globe will need 12v on it . (Lights up with ign on but not running) then when alternator is spinning, it should feed 12v back up the other side of the globe yo switch the globe off. Hope that helps. In place of a globe you can use a resistor. Don't use an led if its not resisted correctly.

    It's a Duralast 12volt 3 wire alternator

  7. i'm going to ***ume you have an Autozone alternator , probably a GM 10Si

it needs to be excited as XMWAGS said.....how did you wire it? are you trying to use it in a positive ground system?

Sounds like you'll need to change to to negative ground. So you'll have to byp*** the ammeter and rewire the ignition coil

Hopefully something like this. If it was 6v, all globes will have to be changed too
