Technical vega steering box

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by spillaneswillys, Oct 26, 2016.

  1. I decided to change to cross steering with a Vega box. Unfortunately Borgeson and all of their suppliers are out of stock due to some part Borgeson is waiting on and they are at least a month out. I see the reviews for a number of other boxes and they don't read too favorable . The only box I can't find anything on is by Helix, sold by some major hot rod supplier. Anybody know anything about them?

Wait for Borgeson. It will be worth the wait.

Man, you've been here since 2010, Helix is Hoffman Group. Pay attention in cl***! From Hoffman, it may as well be made of Play-Doh.

I have used Flaming River with success as well.
Helix? Just search Hoffman and make your decision

    Didn't Borgeson buy Mullins?

Yeah they did. You could go to a 525 box which is slightly bigger than a Vega.

    I have a Borgeson/Mullins and it's a good box. Wait for it.

I used Vega boxes from Speedway for the last two ch***is I did. I don't know where they come from but they are working fine. Price is right. Be aware that they need to be adjusted prior to use.

Jason Slover at Pete & Jakes still has a few Borgeson Vega steering boxes. I got one from him last week, after being strung along by Summit for four months.

And P&J offers free shipping for Alliance Members!

By the way, the 525 box will fit on a vega weld-in mount. It is slightly bigger, but a bit heavier. It works excellent in rods larger than, say, '36 Fords. In fact, some on here recommend the 525 over the vega when used in '37 and up.

I just used a Borgeson 525 box in a Model A truck, very happy with it. It is a little bigger (beefier) than a vega box . You will want the one they build with the short input shaft. If I remember correctly it was a couple bucks cheaper.

guess I'm fortunate to have a junk yard where I can get one if needed. Just have to be selective, they are getting old.

  21. It feel it fair to mention that one could go totally trad and buy a Corvair box. Lost of them easily had for a good price refurbished or repopped.

    Just a thought

Is a new Borgeson Vega/Saginaw 140 stout enough for a fendered '30 A coupe , SBC combo with cross steering ?
Or is the 525 what I should go with...

I'm running one on a non fendered "A" hiboy 3 years now with no problem, also sbc power. But it is a true Borgerson/Mullins, a friend ran one on a 'blown 32, first he bought a Chinese knock off, went bad in a hurry, no problems on the '32, with Borgeson/Mullins, still on it when he sold it.

In my humble opinion, yes. I have run them on cars heavier than yours for thousands of miles with no problems.
I also had an original GM 525 in my 32 coupe and I hated it - Too slow (Higher ratio, although I understand the Boregeson version is essentially the same as the Vegamatic)

  25. I called Pete And Jakes tuesday and they are sold out

On the Bay, you can lay pretty good odds they are the Chinese knockoffs.

Only Mullins/Borgeson boxes on my customer ch***is. Their safety comes ahead of saving a few bucks.

I used a Vega box from CPP in Placentia CA on 34 Ford pickup. They claim it was made in Germany. Been in for a year + and works fine.
