Picked this up a few weeks ago. Got it started& drove it around a small town for about 20 minutes. Ran rough/hesitated more when cold but shifted smooth and stopped. Brake pedal was really hard. Does have some rust on floors but nothing that can't be fixed. I actually took it on trade and was just going to sell, but thinking I may get it running smooth and diagnose/fix the brakes. I'd appreciate any input as I am new to these oldies!
Looks pretty solid. There are lots of parts available for 54's now. More so than when I had one. Looks like you have a standard transmission. Good. The old powerglides really slowed things down. Brakes were always sketchy as I recall but disc brake conversions for front are now available. Many had rust problems around rear wheels and quarter panels where mud would hang up. Also those chrome bullets under the headlights would catch and hold mud and leaves and rust out. Believe 54 was the first year for pressurized oil system. Could be a fun driver with a little work. You may have a Del Ray there instead of a Bel Air from the looks of the single strip side chrome.
The body has had work done, I saw bondo in the 1/4 panels under the bad paint job, so not sure how original the chrome is. Also came with an entire extra front dog house. Thanks for the info, still learning!
What you have is a 1954 Chev 210. Google that , for a lot of inspiration, then start your own prespiration. I am no whiz on Chevies, but I don't think Del Ray's came along till 1955.
Del Ray and 210's were both offered in 54. Just determined by options. Bel Air was offered as well but had the wider painted strip over the rear fender with upper and lower chrome. Converted mine to 12 volt with single wire alternator. Made a world of difference for starting. But, no matter, like Joker said. Have fun!
