The '61 Comet had a broken battery that leaked acid and dissolved the right front strut suspension completely.:

After "a little work" - all is well and I'm proud:

I think the coolest part itself on my car is the valve covers.

But the thing I am most proud of about my car is that it was my Dad's first car.

I'm proud of the brand new vintage 1960's vacum guage I bought at a garage sale from an older man for $2.00.

He said he would sell it to me, as long as I used it. It went on the olds the very next day.

  6. Denise hit the nail on the head.

It's the stuff you do yourself that does it for me.

I have lots of little - and not so little - trick parts on both roadsters, but the home-made steering columns are my favorites.
    Ball bearings on both ends.

    The 32:

    The 31:

    About $12. - $15. invested in the 32 column.
Maybe $25. at a max in the 31 column.

Nice part is the ball bearings make the cars steer very easily.
Rolling at less than walking speed - as long as you're rolling - means one finger steering on the 32 and the 31 is easy in the garage and once it hits the road, probably easier yet due to the narrower tires.

I gotta get me some of that mud.
All I got now is Arizona dust....

  9. It was the shifter, which had a stock '54 Dodge "meat grinder" shift lever grafted onto a B&M ratchet.

Until I drilled the gas in 1st, and the weight of the shift lever kept it from snapping forward so I could hit 2nd (manual valve body). By the time I noticed (split second) that I had to pull it forward so I could slap it back for the upshift... things got expensive.

Now the rev limiter is what I'm happy about...

Here's the nose I built for the our race car a number of years ago. I made it so it screws over the deuce grille shell that was used when we built the car. At the time I had never made anything like this in aluminium. Never had the english wheel at the time. This was all done over a lead shot bag, hammer and dolly and file finished. Yup I am pretty proud of how it turned out. Geoff aka whodaky

My chop and the stance of my herpie. The chop isnt perfect by any means and it helped keep bondo in buisness but im very proud that i did it with out ever working with metal before. And the stance cause it was the biggest challange i had to face on my car. It takes a lot to get a car to lay the bumper on the ground. And again when i never did any kind of suspension fab before. i just ahd to learn and it has proven its self time and again.

the part where it goes down the road at 70-80 mph, from 1 to 12 hours at the time, over, and over, and over, again.

There's a lot of it that I'm proud of, but the color scheme is probably its most distictive feature.

I'm proud that about 30 minutes ago I got it started for the first time since October. Might be a roadtrip to Austin in it's future next weekend after all.

  20. The steering wheel! it was nuthin but a steel ring on the top half. When I took the cover off of it, most of the wheel came with it. Lots of epoxy filler and sanding later,it got painted rustoleum pure white. {now I have to wash my paws befor I drive it!:D }

Not really a "part" but I just did my first front end alignment by myself on my '55. After 3 years with an off center steering wheel, it's finally straight :D :D :D

If I had to pick a part, it would be my home ground WWWs.

C9 you beat me to the punch with your sentiments and I fully agree. I didn't see one post that said " The _________that I bought" but many that said " The ___________that I built/fabbed/designed". Denise, I was wondering what that little door is for, my '48 has one too, hmmmmmm. Whodaky, that is some beautiful metal fabrication and it turned out very nice, real good compound curves that are very pleasing to look at. And the post about the steering wheel that was hand wrapped, the '40 dash modified for the '28 rpu and on and on and on. This is a great thread.

For me, I can't say yet because I have not started on my '48 yet and some work I have done on cars that don't qualify for this forum can't be mentioned so I won't. But it is all fab work that I did myself.
