A friend gave me a lead to a local garage that had an old "Ford" and Metropolitan cars. Went to check it out and found a 54 Met, a Cushman and the Ford turned out to be I believe a 37 Plymouth. (Small parts were labeled in a file cabinet). Husband p***ed away 4 years ago and the wife needs room to store her tractors. New boyfriend has no interest in "old stuff". What I also found was a Desoto hemi (on valve covers) sitting on a stand and other hemi parts ****tered all over the 5 car garage. Desoto appears to be complete with a newer carb. Bought the Cushman and may buy the hemi and parts but not sure what they are worth. A fair price for both she and I. Not sure if all blocks, bell housings, exh manifolds etc. are hemi as a lot of other (small block ford?) parts are mixed in. Seems to be some adapter plates that fit between block and bell housings? How do I identify the blocks? Everything has a light rust patina including the cyl walls. Probably not pitted but ???? Don't want the parts s****ped as the stepson already junked "some of the parts". The 37 Ply seems to be all orig but the engine and trans are missing. Running car before taken apart by the husband. Hate to lose usable parts to a s**** yard. Any help identifying parts and reasonable value would be great. Bob (RollinRock)
I hate to be craven, but in my opinion, saving this stuff from the s****per trumps making sure the widow gets a fair price. She already has a "boyfriend" and a stepson looking out for her. As the stepson seems to be inclined towards the s****per, just try to get the stuff.
To me the single biggest ticket item their to get your paws on is that red 413" long ram 2x4 intake. It's a pretty rare bird. But then again l'd get the whole pile!
I don't know **** about hemi stuff, but that appears to be a genuine treasure trove ya got there. Do what ya gotta do to get the whole pile, & sort it out from there. Those long rams for sure are highly desirable. Do it.
X2 Bigtime. And x2 what slowmotion and Bowie said. The crossrams are probably worth more than the Cushman. Make an offer to "clean out the garage to the walls (tools and equipment included if they don't want it either) and haul it all off" as if it were junk. It's clutter to them and they have no interest in it. If you weren't there, they would hire (pay) a junk hauler/s****per to haul it all off. This quote; the stepson already junked "some of the parts", to me reads he took all the aluminum down to sell as s****. Hope it wasn't Hemi intakes. Take everything and sell off what you don't want to keep. Do the Metro and Sedan have ***les? They look really solid. Drop the Hemi in the Metro...
Based on the s**** value that the step son got, go a little higher and haul it away for free! No work/time for them and they get $$. Oh and sweep up afterwards.
I would even rent a storage unit to put that stuff in if I had to in order to get it all. Like everyone said, the crossrams are worth a bunch, and the Desoto hemi is probably worth a grand. This is an excellent opportunity for you to make some money on that stuff. I don't know what the car is worth, but it looks pretty solid so I am sure someone would like to restore it.
Thanks for all the replies. Thought the long intakes looked familiar in a mag. Will try to buy all parts and Desoto hemi to save from s****per. (I am more familiar with flatheads and sorry SBC. But grew up on both. Still have my 60 hp 37 flat back that I drove in college, Put a 8BA in it will no fan and 4:44 rear. Was fun, but did not always stop with mechanical brakes. Put 60hp back in and kept the 8BA.) May buy the Met and 37 Ply but don't need more projects. (Let's see, a Met with a hemi. Might need to change the little ft tires?) Starting on 50 Ply wagon. Thanks again, Bob
Yep. Based on your account, if these people want market value for this stuff it's on them to research prices, then market it and do the hard work, otherwise they only deserve clean out price. I'm with the general consensus that sympathy level is at rock bottom here.
Help em out. If jr. just sees s****, give them $500and take it all. Get some bros together and make that garage shine.
You best be checking the RB block for displacement and date codes...if the block and long rams happen to be related then you have $$$$$ sitting there. The value of the long rams is based on the condition where the exhaust chamber is and if you have any of the linkage for them. Buy it all and sort it out later. .
You only took a few things?! I woulda made a package deal for it all on the spot. Buy it all for a price that you know you can sell a few items for and you're sittin' pretty to make some money and get some free stuff for yourself. This seems like a no-brainer to me.. but I'm a ****er for old junk and have space to store it! Good luck with it all, good score! P.S.- I see you're in Eastern PA as well. If you want someone to go in on it all with you or help with moving/storing stuff, let me know. I like a good adventure and saving old iron!
That appears to be a Hudson Metropolitan. There were fewer of those made than the more common Nash Metro. Buy it all and figure it out later!
The bare block needs to be ID'd it could be the winner--if 426 hemi it will have cross bolted mains--if not bet it is 413-426 wedge could be a max wedge block--you will see notch at top of bore for valve clearance if maxie--a plain old 413 or 426 wedge block is nothing to get excited about--the Long rams sell if complete with all the linkage etc they ROT out in spots pretty easy--just the manifolds in fair shape are not that big a deal If that block had HC on the ID pad call me man! That means high compression max wedge and that you have a winner!
Jumping Jehoshaphat! All those parts and engines just sitting there? Jackpot! My advice would be to get as much as you can or all of it. Then get it home and get it sorted. After that, build yourself a cool hotrod Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
what most said.....the engine #'s should be on a block in the front just above where there water pump should be......your easy on a grand - $1000 on engine stuff alone....the Destota looks like a runner....and those long 413 manifolds...if the engine has 413 or 426 on the pad we have a winner....the little Met/Nash is a $3000 car....what's left of the sedan....not much.....my two sentences.....give the widow some green....so she can put an add in for a new boyfriend....
