And I apologize that I took the pics with my phone sideways!! I always forget it will show up sideways If someone knows how to rotate them I am all ears..... Thanks and sorry for the pic angle. I just viewed what I posted and I apologize yet again. I wouldn't look at these pics as it gives me a headache. What a mess
I made it up to the shop for a couple hours and got the p***enger side welded up. I am not yet able to do the from "lip" in front of the tires because the patch panels haven't yet arrived for me to replace the rusted areas. It kinda ****s motoring away at 90% of a lot of things but not being able to fully cross the items off the list. I'm hoping to have most of the sheetmetal for the holiday break. Below are a few pics right side up this time
Was able to spend a couple hours up at the shop yesterday and got the seat "cage" built and pinned in place for mock up. Fits very well and will serve as an anchor point for the seat belts and securely tie the seating to the frame and not sheetmetal. Har to tell but I had welded some "lugs" to the top side of the frame rails. The seat cage then slides over the lugs and then gets pinned in four points. This also allows the entire seating ***embly to be easily removed. Try not to mind the use of round tube as it will all be hidden for the most part by the seats and upholstery. The seats I ended up using fit perfectly and sit very low and yet have a track for adjustability. I won't post any pics of the seats until they at least have seat covers over them. Just too ugly to even look at.
Good meeting you yesterday. Todays a new day for me and i feel a hell a lot better. Had to refresh myself with your build. It's going the right direction for sure. Looking good!
Thanks Ty. You saved my tail big time with the uppers! Nice meeting you and glad you are on the mend. Again, if I can ever help you out, consider it done. Here is a few hours work from today. Got the top of the door fitted on and welded up. Fit like a glove. I then finished up the bottom half. Was going to use entire skin but it was about an inch undersized from the belt line! After I trimmed it a smidge, I tacked it all up and then finished welded with some hammering. Very smooth believe it or not. I then went back and put some steel panels on the inside with a little bead rolled into them. I will have interior upholsetery but in the meantime I cant have all the ugliness just showing itself.
A few update pics of the build. I got some inspiration to build my own steering column thanks to Mike (prewarcars4me). He did a great write up and I borrowed his ideas to make my own. I used tapered spindle bearings and machined the "hubs" to slide ove a piece of 1.75" OD tubing. For the shaft itself, I used a piece of 1" SS rod that I had lying around. Machined two flats. I made the actual steering wheel as well. I had an old flywheel rusting in my truck and had wanted to use it for a steering wheel but quickly realized it wasn't really safe as I couldn't truly grip it so I opted for the next best thing and simply mounted it in the "bowl" of the wheel I made. I also made some progress with the body and doors. Primed them. I will be blasting all of the primer off before it gets a true coat of paint but that is a long way off.
A few progress pics. I am not going to use my seat "cage" like originally planned and earlier mentioned. Instead I will likely incorporate an anchor point behind some bomber style seats. Also, the wheels in these pics are temp. All of those will go. With the help of Ty on here, I think I am going for some Vintiques and blackwall Coker combo. This is all part of the learning curve. Changing my mind all of the time. Hopefully for the better If anyone has any input or ideas of what to do or do better, I am all ears. This is my first build and I have realized things now that I would've done differently. Oh, and just if you were wondering about the color, no worry. That is just primer to keep if from rusting. It won't get a "real" paint job for some time. It will get media blasted when the time comes.
I know it has been a long time since i posted anything. I made some changes to things as I was going along. Changed the rear wheelwells and ditched the idea of the seat ***embly in favor of Bombers. I will swap out the new age headers for lake style when I get some more time. Getting closer though
I've enjoyed reading about your new project, but I'd love to hear more on how you finished this one up
Samuel, To be honest, I made a LOT of mistakes building this one! It was my first attempt at putting something like this together. I think the thread covers a lot of the mistakes. In the end, I wanted something that was safe to drive and reliable. It now runs like a top and is fun to tool around town and the countryside on nice days. Body saw no further work. All my efforts are going into the next build. Thanks for asking though. Grant Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
