Technical ***November 2016 Banger Meet - Shorter Days Up North***

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jiminy, Oct 31, 2016.

  1. I haven't checked in here for a while but I must say I have been having quite a good time driving my '31 Pickup. At first there was talk of swapping out the Banger for a V8 but after fitting the 81A into my old Sedan frame I put a crusty coupe body on it to see how the firewall fit and decided I didn't want to cut up such a nice pickup. So the pickup remains Banger powered and after six months of ownership I have nearly 2000 miles on it. I love driving it the 20 miles from my house to the shop through the country and at 50 mph I arrive much more relaxed than when I took the freeway at 70 in my more modern truck. I think I'm hooked! Although I still like a good V8 and will be continuing on with the AV8 coupe.

I did install a Mallory distributor and it made a big difference in drivability.

Often seen parked in the lot of the shop.

Just the angle. That's part of the old garage door you see inside. Zoning in my town made it most beneficial to build the new garage around the old one. The staircase will be to the left of the people door.

  5. Steve,
the plan right now is to be there. I dropped a valve in the motor a couple weekends ago and have been repairing it.

    See you there, J

Our woody is stock except for a 6v pos ground alternator .... it's like driving a 36 HP VW. Not bad at all but it is STOCK. The brakes even work unless you need a couple stops. So perhaps a little more modern braking is in order.

We own old fast cars and slow. Small and large so I have a lot of choices and know from driving them all which are fast and which are just "theater"

  10. Good Morning Fellas.
Does anyone know where I can get flywheel housing mounts to put my B transmission in my A frame?
I have the B housing and transmission, a set of cherry 39 gears, the wishbone and pedal adapters. I have just been unable to locate the proper mounts. The difference between the two housings is 3/4". Do guys just use 3/8"plates to push the A mounts in enough or what? If I did this would I put the "shims" between the frame and the motor mount or between the flywheel housing and the motor mount?
    Thanks in advance

the 3/8 plates would be an ez & safe way to do that . don't see any problems . I would put them between the motor mounts & frame

I'd talk to Steve Becker at Bert's about using Float-A-Motor mounts. His number is 800-321-1931...closed Monday.

  13. Steve was my first call he said no one is making the B trans in the A frame mount anymore. Said it's been a few years since they were made. So in true hot rodder fashion I'll be making this work

  14. Post some pics of what you come up with please @Tiny

  15. I will @cactus1 Honestly the trans is still a bit off. I started tearing down a motor to rebuild this weekend. My engine is so tired its sad. The plan is to replace the motor and tranny at the same time. Hopefully in January- Febuary

What a beautiful engine set up - Can we have another photo from the right side showing the double intake manifold, please...

  20. Jim, that should be repaired. If not the indent could cause problems with the float lever.

what happened to the copper on the other carb ?

  22. The one I used rust dissolve on? The copper was already gone on that one. I did determine that the dissolve did not eat away at the metal of the carb though

  23. I posted it about a week ago.. how? take it apart and resolder?

I would clean & use it . good for you . if no leaks all the better

  25. Thanks! This is the only other pic I have at hand. The intake is a junky copy of a Burns I think?

I like the looks of that intake much - Also the aftermarket distributor shape goes along with the double downdraft carburetors nicely. Winfield valve cover is a gem. Congratulations!

  30. Yes, I think you are correct. I was thinking one thing and wrote another. Whatever it is I do believe it's a copy.
