Thinking of everyone in New Zealand. Christchurch does not deserve this 2nd big quake, think they suffered enough with the last one. Hope everyone is safe.

One of the members of the Old Farts social group who is in NZ on North Island, and about 500 miles away from epicenter has replied on OF that he is fine, but others are of course much closer. Many residents of North Island who reside on low ground have headed for the hills as a precaution on expected Tsunami and aren't able to respond just now online, and the same is prollt true on South Island.
I spent some time in Christ Church back in the mid 90s and it was a beautiful city with many brick buildings. Even before this 2nd quake, I'm told much of what I saw back then was gone.

Latest news on tragedy on the east coast of the South Island two were killed in a house collapse .
Our friends from the South Island that attended Deuce days here in the North are apparently stuck here as the ferry is not sailing due to Tsunami risk and the east coast road is damaged.
So our Amercian visitor Artist Tom Fritz that attended Deuce days was lucky to fly home just before the disaster and airports closed.

Felt it strongly here in Hamilton. Only 2 deaths at this stage, they're still ***essing damage. Aftershocks were 6.2, 6.2, 6.0, and 5.7. 2m tsunami at Kaikoura. Roads and rail are severely damaged, Cook Straight ferry terminals damaged. Sounds like a real mess.

It seems that earthquakes are common enough in New Zealand that some Kiwis don't even notice them. I checked with my buddy on the north island, and he slept right through this one, but he was a couple hundred miles away. I suspect things might have been different if he had been in Christchurch or Wellington. He might even have stopped snoring briefly!

It woke me up (12.02am NZ time), lasted about 45 seconds. Yes two dead and some very bad damage near the epicentre and as far up as Wellington. All good where I am which is about 40 miles north east of Wellington. 7.5 is big and hope it doesn't trigger other fault lines to move. JW

  29. I'd just gone to bed, when things started swaying.
The g friend wasn't staying over, so I knew it wasn't her, helping herself. :D
I go check on the kid, the hallway is rolling crazy. I had to look twice at the kid, her eyes were shut. She slept through the whole thing.
Flatmate calm, lots of banging, but after it stopped, nothing was on the floor.
Land surfing..... who needs a board!
So next very important mission, is to check shed. No damage, Harley fenders I'm halfway through painting for a buddy all good. Cars ok, nothing on the floor.
I tell flatmate, this is the biggest I've been through, and I can't believe there's no damage, but if we weren't at the center, then somewhere is ****ed up.
Aftershocks all night, and into the arvo today.
Wake this morning to hear, two dead, one in building collapse, another from heart attack. :(
I check my friends and customers around both islands, with lots of different reports.
My oldest customer from Christchurch, tells me she sat on her front lawn crying, in the early hours.
They have done it hard, in the last few years, where as over on my side of the Island, we don't get many, and nothing like this, since 1967, when, as a one year old, I slept through it.
Lots of damage on the East Coast, I'm on the West.
Now it's raining, with storm warnings, and they are also saying we have a 37% chance of a stronger one, in next three weeks.

  30. Pleased to see Christchurch didn't take a direct hit again.
My thoughts are with family and friends in the region and all those effected.
Resilient bunch Kiwis are, they'll bounce back again.
My true home, beautiful country, full of good people.
