Hello all, I'm a middle aged (mid century) Minnesotan with a 1941 Pontiac business coupe. Got turned on to the H.A.M.B by the guy I bought the '41 from 2 years ago. I have owned a '50 Dodge, '51 Chrysler, a '49 chevy pickup, and now the Pontiac. The latter being the first real ground up project. I am a little concerned my choice of suspension (air bags) might ruffle some feathers, but have found H.A.M.B to be a valuable resource and would like to be able to pick the brains of its' members. With a lowered and slightly raked stance, subdued colored exterior, stock roof height and painted steel wheels I suppose you might consider it resto like. It will however have a Chevy straight six with 3 carbs and split exhaust. Here she is as purchased (with a quick front al***ude adjustment). Current photo with a Chevy straight six and 3 pot Offy .
Hi & welcome. On the bags just do not talk about them and then those that feel offended will have nothing to get upset with. To do a build thread just start it on the Hokey *** message board general discussion & just omit the talk of bags & major front end changes if any. I like your motor set up. Which Chevy 6 is that? I see the side mounts and no split water pump jacket at the front so I know it is newer than the 1957 235 I installed in my 46 Chevy coupe. The intake should work well for you. I chose a bid different route on this for mine as I used a Clifford 2 carb intake & went with the 2 bbl Webber carbs instead. This made it a bit more difficult to do my throttle linkage. My nest project will be to remove the rear knee action shocks and install tube shocks. For the front the upper shock arm is the upper control arm so the front shocks stay but I am just going to add a set of tube shocks to get rid of the surfing ride. Will just keep the original front shocks lubed so they will not go dry and bind up & let the tube shocks do the work. I did change the ring & pinion from the old 411 to a 355 & with the new tires I used Coker 600/R16 front & 700/R116 rear and it will now zip down the Hwy with todays traffic and not be a safety hazard. The way you are doing it with the body off really gives you lots of room to get everything fitted as I had to do everything with body installed. I lucked out on my 46 as there was no rust I floor pans & you Pontiac looks solid but cannot see pans. I would think they use practically the same pans as same body style in a Chevy and eberything is still avalible for the Chevy's. Good luck & get it going. Jimmie
Jimmie, The engine is a 1968 292 truck engine. Floor pans are good, but the rockers need replacement. I think you are right, outside of the fenders and hood, Chevy sheetmetal is the same. Might buy replacement rockers or use that as an excuse to buy more fab equipment (shrinker/stretcher). Sourcing an Explorer 8.8 with 3.73 gears right now, progress stuck until I get one. I was going to suggest rebuilding those front shocks until a little research revealed they are not that service friendly. Thanks for the warm welcome Jimmie. Jeff
Welcome. Looks like a good solid body to start with. Any body mods planned? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Hi, It needs rocker work, but the body is nice and straight. I'm going to keep things pretty simple, just a bumperless rear with a rolled pan. If I were a little braver I'd chop the top, but all the stainless is perfect. I don't want to risk ruining it. Thanks for asking, Toqwik. Sent from my SM-G935T using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
