Painting a Carb

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by blackjack, Mar 26, 2006.

  1. I have a Rochester 2Jet that looks as scruffy as any 35 year old hunk of monkey metal should do.

Ideally I'd like it to be black (George Barris told me if in doubt paint it black). Can it be painted or powdercoated - is this possible or practical??

I've seen the iron bases on Ford 94s painted and powdercoated. Engine paint should do it and resist the fuel rotting it.

  3. If your carbs end up leaking gas much at all . . . seems mine always do at one time of another, almost any spray paint will eventually bubble, discolor or peel away. I've painted many carbs -- always look cool when they're freshly painted . . . and look like shit a few months later. If you're driving the car quite often and expect the carbs to still look great - you'll probably be disappointed.

I'm sure there is the option of powder-coating . . . BUT . . . I'll bet that once you put that crap on, its a real bitch to get back off! I've never used powder-coating on a carb - I believe even carb cleaner isn't going to touch it. If you want to change your mind later on . . . you're probably stuck with whatever powder coating you put on. Also - I'm not sure what type of adhesion you're going to get on all the die-cast surface . . . would hate to see SOME of it come off, and stick like a bastard in other areas - making a clean and repaint an ugly option.

What do others have to say on this?

I agree 100% with Dale..mine were painted 2 years ago, and now they look like shit..the paint is discolored, bubbled, and peeling...take it for what its worth.

What about polishing it up with a wire wheel? Is there a reason you shouldn't do that?

Wire wheeling works fine if you dont mind the finish on it. Powdercoating would work very well and be quite durable. Just make sure you use a good coater that will mask it properly because you don't want any of that stuff to get on the inside of the carb. It'll clog things up in a hurry.
