I'm not hyperjudgemental, but yah, gotta change that flag out. Andy, I just realized you are in the UK, I'm ***uming you are British. I know a lot of British people, and they have told me about how they don't fly flags like Americans, and the whole flag thing doesn't translate. But we Americans, lefties, righties and independanties take the US Flag pretty seriously, and the protocol on how to treat it. The flag as a seat cover is Kinda like me at a soccer stadium, standing in the center of the opponent's fans and wiping my **** with their scarf. Please just take the flag out, rephotograph the car and edit your 1st post. I dig the dash blanket. A lot of HAMBERs are really going to get bent out of shape, especially if they don't understand the difference in flags in England. If you are a US transplant, then that's different, you're on your own kid
No offense intended but you need to o to a automotive trim & upholstery shop and buy a couple of yards of vinyl,it would look so much better. The South Of The Border blanket don't do much for the look of the car. HRP
Ha! I'm not sure it's quite that bad. I'm not gonna kick you in the nuts over mishandling a flag. But I sure wish that we taught flag etiquette in schools. Americans' obsession with the flying the flag anywhere and everywhere grates on me too, since half of them flying the thing never learned flag etiquette either. The long and short is that a flag should never be d****d over anything except a soldier's casket. They are meant to be hung from flagpoles, and to never touch the ground or anything else except the hands that take it down from the flagpole. Sitting on one is only a small step above stomping on it.
Blanket's OK with me too for a non-restored driver. Recovering a dash pad isn't child's play like a door panel. On my '58 I was able to remove it and paint the metal dash, looked great.
There's certainly no offense intended. Over here we see flags as nicely designed logos - and the US and the British flags are the two best in my opinion. Lots of people have Union Jack bedspreads, towels and cushions - you can even get a Union Jack fridge. The Mexican blanket covering the dash doesn't fix it but try and find either a replacement dash or one of those tailored pads over here...
Wow didn't expect to get so much reaction to the rear seat situation the BLANKET is only a representation of the American flag but be ***ured in the interest of good relations and not intending to upset you guys I will remove it from the rear seat my apologies! Cool, we know you weren't trying to offend anyone. Thanks for understanding! Rock on, '59 Ford is my 3rd favorite car.
A lot of blood was lost over that ole flag. All Americans take great pride of our flag. It represents all the brave men and women who fought for our freedom. Not just Americas freedom but freedom for everyone. That's exactly why I'd like to firmly kick the sport players in the nuts for not standing during our national anthem.
Actually the US flag was originally d****d, as on a balcony. Hanging the flag on a pole made it a military flag. You are right, no one is taught about the flag.
Lotta nut kicking going on here in this thread. That's cool. We all need a kick once in a while. My friend Tess from England was a skinny old hippy, as peaceful as could be, but he had been a soccer hooligan. The three guys in a Toyota behind him in a Burger King drive through were tapping his bumper, beeping, laughing at him. Threatening him. He got out, picked up his sandaled foot and kicked the driver's face through the open window over and over until he was ****** and basically unconscious. Got back in his car, ordered his food and slowly moved on with his day. Moral of the story: never laugh at a hippy. The dash pad on my '60 caddy is all cracked. I even had it removed at one point, but it was just too much work to replace all the vinyl and padding so back in it went. I don't like the way the pad covers look so I just roll with it. I might do something like that blanket in the future.
interesting idea for covering dashboard problems. many places sell a custom shaped cover using carpeting over here. also, there a expensive vinyl covers too. so, if you like it keep it.
Musta been some wusses,I'm sure it would have played out a lot different in South Carolina... True story, about 11 PM one Saturday night for reasons unknown a drunk redneck driving a big Chevy wrecker plowed into the back of a hippy's brand new VW sitting at a drive through at Shoney's screaming insults at him and his friend and kept hitting him until he just took off with the truck in hot pursuit,at every red light for several miles the truck driver slammed into the VW. Finally the hippy had enough and hot out of the car to confront the truck driver and his buddy, holding a beer, exited the bug also. The truck driver got out with a baseball bat and said he was gonna kill a couple of Fu@k!ng hippy's~the hippy had a 38 in his hand, the redneck had a baseball bat in his hand about ready to crack a gourd and the VW p***enger was armed with a open beer. Just as the melee was about to take place red lights lit up the moonless night,a policeman yelled out that he had been dispatched and had witnessed the last hit....the nest thing out of his mouth was "Drop the Beer",never mentioned the gun or the baseball bat,all he saw was the dammed open container. The hippy tossed the gun in the nearby cornfield just before the second police car arrived. Long story short, the redneck was arrested for ***ault and destruction of property, drunk driving,Rick the Hippy was arrested for drunk driving and his buddy, After the police discovered Ricks buddy was holding the beer and not drinking he was left standing on the side of the road watching both autos being impounded. At that time there were no cell phones and Ricks buddy walked almost twelve miles to get home in the early morning hours. You have probably figured it out by now that I was the p***engers later in the VW....I never rode with Rick again. Regrettable Rick went back and found that revolver a couple of years later he used it to end his life. HRP
Well, at least you solved your dash problem. One solution often exposes another problem. That's life. Good to see old US iron overseas. You guys pay a pretty penny to play with our cars.
I believe there is a company called Dashtop.com. They manufacture some type of plastic dash cover. You secure it with a few dabs of silicone and you are done, though you may want to paint first. They look first cl*** and you have to know what to look for to tell the difference.
these side stories, like one from HOTRODPRIMER are very interesting - but, what do they have to do about a guy showing off the cover he has on his dashboard?
....and as I lay here in bed I look down at the pattern on my boxer briefs and low and behold, Americana. Old navy is a big offender of American flag clothing (which is also supposed to be disrespectful). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ok I seem to have caused an international incident over the "flag"which is actually a fleece blanket which in my humble opinion is being used in a way that it was intended! I feel like my nuts have been well and truly kicked from here to Kingdom come! I am a huge fan and admirer of your United States of America and have huge respect for you and your flag especially when related to the military service! I have been to the museum in Siagon and stood crying with others at the hopelessness of that war and the huge loss of innocent valuable lives!I have been to ground zero and felt the pain! My use of the flag-blanket seat cover is out of respect and my way of showing other brits how I feel about you and your country!upmost respect guy's sorry if I caused anyone any pain! and on that note I am looking forward to using this forum for advice and hopefully to make friends. That's how I took it. My first thought was Wow, an American flag displayed in another country and its not on fire. The US does not have a lot of friends here of late but we can always count on Great Britain and a few others when we need some help. If I ever decide to put the Union Jack on one of my British cars it also will be out of respect. I like your car and the dash cap is not a bad idea if they make one for your model. I could not find one for a 61 Galaxie but I had one on a 71 Mopar and it looked great.
It's not necessary for you to keep apologizing because you were not aware that some Americans may be offended by that. I've seen American flag floor mats before and as an Army vet that really pissed me off that some idiot would make one for people to wipe their feet on. Why not put a British flag back there instead? Good luck with the car. Does it have a V8 or a straight 6?
Wow, that is a heck of a story, I didn't realize it was a first hand one till the end. Intense. Sorry about your friend. I've learned over the years that the dog that barks the loudest isn't the one that's gonna bite the hardest.
Nothing. But if paddling down a river in a canoe is life, aren't the tributaries and streams the most interesting places to explore?
So is the blanket ok then? I'm always confused by this. As long as it's not a "real" flag it's acceptable? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
