Got thinking today about the stuff I got stashed in my small shop, got looking for premade brackets and thought about how much shit I really have. Every year, I go through my shop with a camera and shoot every square inch of the shop, in case someone should want my stuff more than me, I'll know what's missing. I open all my tool chest drawers, take pics of all the shelving, even my steel rack.
How many of you ever do this? I live in the backwoods now, but for 40 years I lived in the city where breakins were common, although, touch wood, never happened to me. Sure helps with insurance coverage.

  2. If you can get past my 10 barking dogs, auto lights, alarm system and gun collection, you actually do want my tools more than I do.

I just upgraded my tool storage to make it tougher should someone feel like they can take my tools. I did the same thing and photographed every drawer. These days it's a must.

I have not done this, but I think I will, it is a very good idea. Thank you for the suggestion....

All of my stuff has been in storage for so long, I cannot remember exactly what I have.

Should I count the ones I can't find or haven't gotten back yet?

I have a 20'x20' and only recently wrote a list of all my tools and values for insurance purposes. I was shocked at how many tools I actually had and then I tallied up known replacement values.:eek: I want to but more for retirement so I can tinker away and not bother anyone! Those that inherit them most likely won't know what they or how to use them when I'm not here. I'd better develop a plan to show them now before I develop Old timers disease and forgot that I have them:confused:;):D

  12. I do that with the pictures of the drawers. I told my insurance guy I did it and he was like "wow...no one ever does that"
But after a friend had a fire and only got reimbursed for what he could id from the rubble and what he could remember he had I figured no way I'm going through that.

My land lord, who's been wrenching since the early 60's, says if you can count 'em, you don't have enough. However, a couple days ago, I needed a Phillips head screw driver and couldn't find one! How the hell do you have a shit load of tools, but when you need a gawd dang screw driver, you end up making a drive to the hardware store!? What the hell, man?!:confused:

Who's taking my screw drivers and why the hell are you still on my lawn!?

Oh..... Happy gawd dang Thanksgiving........ tourist!

My digital camera in movie mode will do a four hour video so I walked around my shop and store room filming all of my tools and hardware with a continuous voice over describing the stuff. I loaded it on to a thumb drive and store it offsite for security. If anybody does steal it at least I have a good record for the insurance people. You can never have too many tools and I'm a sucker for "C" clamps. Every swap meet I try and buy any old American made stuff and after a quick soak in rust remover and a spray of WD-40 they go on the rack with the others. You can't have too many clamps for a welding project.

Screw drivers, pliers, and side cutters, grow legs and walk away from me. In answer to question, how many, TOO many and yet not enough, as I Work on a project, look for something, most of the time, just had in my hand, can't find it, so I get another one, when I'M done and cleaning up, wonder, why are there so many duplicates, The Fun of being a Senior and Thankful to be here.

  24. I have 2 rollaways bottoms and 2 top boxes, one is stuffed the other not as much. If I evened it out each set up would serve someone well. I should clean it all up and take pictures. My garage is secure and has an alarm system.

Not enough tools,(my wife may not agree) but I use what I have every day lately. Some may sit in a drawer or under the bench for months or years at a time but are there when needed. That is if I can find them....... I still have not done the photo thing. It would be a good idea though.

  26. when you think of it.....LOTS. we have our bolt turning tools, hammers screw drivers and stuff. But then if you do any wood working, you have all of that, Claw hammers, wood chisels, spade bits, wood saws and all that. Then if you do metal fab work, welders, torch, lathe, mill. Add all the house fixin' tools caulk gun, drywall knife, drywall square. I mess around with antique radios so I have meters, scopes, signal generators, soldering irons. Body work? air sanders air compressors .....
Man the list goes on and on.
Guess I got to get a camera out...damn, no camera!
