Hello, I have read a lot of threads on the Aerostar springs for lowering and it sounds like a really cool idea. I currently have the Granada spindles on my 1954 Customline. Will they work on my car, or do you think that it would make the car sit too low. Thanks everyone! Zach
How much did the Granada spindles lower your car? The Aerostar coils will yield around 2" of drop. I'd try it and see how you like it. You can get coil spring spacers to take out some or all of the drop if you want. On my car I have the Versailles spindles and they drop the car about 1.5". I also have the Aerostar springs. So I put in a .750 spacer to negate the 1.5 spindle drop. A spacer will raise or lower a car twice it's thickness . So a .500 spacer will raise the front end 1".
we're gonna get back to the same discussion we've had in the past. Every car is different depending on weight of the drivetrain, and what your comparing to. Aerostars may only drop your car 2" compared to worn out 60 year old oem springs, but if you're comparing to new springs, it'll be WAY more...when I tried them, my car dropped about 4 1/2", way too much and the car was bottoming out. Even though my springs I was replacing were too high...an inch over oem even with 2 1/2 dropped Granada spindles.
The Moog Aerostars dropped my '59 too much, but looked great. Look at the Moog CC851 springs if that's the issue. They're a little taller and the spring rate is close to a stock OEM spring. I just whacked 1 coil off my used OG springs and am fairly happy with it, may go another 1/2 coil.
As you can see everyone has different tastes when it comes to lowering there cars. I feel that my car needs another inch lower front and back. I plan on putting in 3" blocks and swap out the .750 spacer for either a .250 or .500 to get the ride height I desire. The best advice would be to try it and see.
Dropped mine 3 in. lower with stock spindels, than the pic in my avitar. Guess I should put up a new pic!
I still have the original springs on the car and I think the Granada spindles dropped it just under 2 inches with those. It looks like I can try them out, because it like $50 for a pair from Rock Auto. I could always do the spacers that 56longroof mentioned if it ends up too much. I will just play around with a few things. Thank you all again, best thing I could have done was joining this group. Everyone has been so much help!!
Not a matter of different tastes, but different results for two different vehicles. What I am saying is someone with the original springs in their car already has a somewhat "lowered" stance over original ride height because their springs are worn out, so a 2" drop when aerostars are installed sounds like the norm for that situation In the case of someone like myself who had new oem ("as original")replacements in the car and I was playing with different springs because my resulting ride height with my lightweight drivetrain was too high, had the mentioned 4 1/2 drop when testing the aerostars. That big difference made the car too low. Another way of saying all that is two guys both wanting a 2" drop in the same cars with different drivetrains and/or differences in their starting suspensions may get different results.
