It not the dollars that make the car...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RacerRick, Mar 26, 2006.

  1. I got into an argument with a guy about how little I spent on my car compared to his (non-hamb friendly car).

His car goes 11's with a $10K engine. My car goes 12's with a $2500 engine. His car has a $5k paint job. My car has original faded paint. Apparently his car is soooooo much better than mine because he can open his wallet wider than me.

He got into a pile of snide comments until I got annoyed enough to call him on his comments.

I built my entire car, and its built for road racing, not drag, and I didn't have to finance its build. I know it looks a little rough because its not done yet. But I don't go out and make fun of other peoples cars that are not finished or junky looking.

I find it funny that my car is almost as fast as his dedicated drag car, cost a quarter what his cost, yet turns and stops and gets thrashed brutally every time I take it out. I guess I get the last laugh since I enjoy my car more.

He might have 4 times the money in his, but you have 100 times the "heart" in yours. That counts a hell of a lot more in my book.

  5. Kick him in the balls, run for your car, jump in and head for a twisty road...

That's what I've been told to do in that situation, but maybe I was brought up different.

Don't let it bother you, you have no idea what I go through living on a nostalgia island in the middle of a billit ocean here in Fresno all of my cars are suede, rough and built tough, multiple carbs and WW, the cookie cutter people cannot understand why I do not run a 4 barrel and billet wheels and tweed interior and electric windows and air conditioning, well my father ran Hot Rods and built them in the glory of Hot Rodding days and to me there is no other way, so what I say to the wiseguys whom want to comment, I work by the hour and I own EIGHT Hot Rods to your ONE so "**** OFF".

  12. Doesn't sound like the kind of guy that's going to listen to anything you say, so just walk away go have fun!

  13. Your dollar boating , ah, er, acquaintance,..... He's trying to talk down to you, making himself feel big, by how much money he spent, probably jealous that you are smarter than him to build yours for less.............and the horse he rode in on.

Just the other day, the proud owner of a plastic bodied, gel-coated, replika asked me how much my car was worth, because he thinks his ride is hot-****, nothing will compete with it, and like your guy, he's always bragging about how much this and that cost, yatta-yatta-yatta. Booring ****, all the time.

I insisted I didn't know how much it was worth, for a fact, I'll never put a price on it. He pressed me. I finally gave him an answer he didn't like.

"Let's put it this way, it's worth enough to me that I wouldn't trade it for yours, if you paid me to boot."

  14. as for that last line in your post.....DAMN RIGHT!

i know we all bag on the street rodders cars and they all talk **** on ours, but i have noticed that the latter lacks the integrity to keep his opinions to himself. as if money makes him better, well i was brought up with the mentality that "a penny saved is a penny earned" and that is the fabric that defines and binds us here on the HAMB. we appreciate the effort that went into fabricating and building eachothers rides, even if we dont like certain things on a car we will respect the others taste and choice as long as it fits in overall. i have been tempted to serve up knux many times when hearing a group of street rodders having a laugh when im getting into my car but havent and i would urge any others here to do the same, just let it go even if its tough. we are better than that and we need to keep it that way.

Can't remember who posted it first but the quote

"a goldchainer is someone who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing"

    Seems to apply here.

  20. Kick 'em in the danglies and run!

That's what the other guy is talking about anyways... It has nothing to do with his "car".

    That quote above is awesome!
I know that the stuff I have gathered over the years is worth quite a lot, but can't for the life of me remember what I paid for it... Don't think I want to either... :D :D

In situations like mentioned in the first post, I hardly have any respect for people who 'buy' their way into a certain "hobby"-scene.
People's abillity to learn things, putting your own ingenuity to work, fabricate and putting your stuff together with your own hands earns my respect bigtime...

And, by the way... Who needs paint anyway... it only prevents mother nature doing it's thing on metal... :D

There is a BIG difference between running 11's and running 12's. That one second will cost you thousands weather you built it yourself or weather someone else built it. Low et's on the racetrack=$$$.

    Been there dude.
Here's a little advice from an old skool, old rodder, that wanted the dream billet beauty and ended up building my own ride the way I wanted. Yes, my ride is shiny, but that's they way I wanted it. My ride has a six cylinder in it,
has simple chrome smoothies, no billet anything, lots of home made stuff on it, my own ideas and designs, not someone elses copy of a shiny crow attraction, but that's they way I wanted it!

I've been harrased by the big buck guys that said, "if you just did it that way, it would have won first place". I always say back to them, "this is my car and I'll do it the way I want, thank you dirtbag!" I've been praised by the only person who can criticize me, and I thank him every time I look in the mirror!

When I was younger the local hang out was Mid Town Plaza. It was an elevated parking lot right on main street. Of all the people that hung out there with their cars, there were 2 groups. The people who built it and the people who bought it. The built cars were always original paint, and rough around the edges. Those guys that financed, or just bought someone elses hard work got no respect. Sure our cars weren't as pretty, but they went just as fast. And we could take all the credit, because it was done with our own 2 hands. The best part about that place was at least 3 times a month, someone from the bought it group was asking us if we had an extra plug wire because they burnt one on a header. And of course the built guys always have a few extras stashed somewhere in the car. :)

........."a goldchainer is someone who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing"

and that is a fantastic quote......

You need one of my club's "My other ride is your mom" stickers.

It will make you feel better.

  26. Another way of looking at it is resale value at the end of the day. The differential between investment and return drops dramatically with the amount spent on the car. A nicely built $20k car will likely get that out of it when it's put on the market, a $100K car may get $60-$70K.

  27. I've posted this before, but here we go again. There was a guy in my machinist cl*** that wanted to race my flathead against his import tuner. I tried to explain the apples and oranges thingie, but it didn't get through. Then I proposed another compe***ion. I would duel him with my pickup truck. Two races...Race #1 Red Light to Red Light. I predicted he would win. Race #2 We nose up to one another on a local dam. Then we see who can shove the other one into the water. He p***ed

...and I'm sure in general more people like your car over his!

  29. If I wanted to race him, I would come out in my low 10 second car. Its a drag car that is street legal and street driven.

  30. My car would then only a third of what his car cost.
