That sums up NY real well. My uncle got h***led by the DMV because someone turned him in for driving his '61 sunliner "too" much on the YOM plates. Of course he couldn't face his accuser. But he explained that he was retired and hadn't put 2500 miles on the car that year. Basically politely to told the guy to go F himself.

NY needs to take a lesson from some other states and let street rods and hot rods and special interest cars have their own cl*** of registration.

In Texas you can year of manufacture plates. They have to p*** inspection a DMV, not much of problem, then you can regiater as antique or cl***ic. Difference is: Antique - Driven only to show or display, good for 5 years
Cl***ic - Drive anytime, register every year. No inspection or other B.S. with either. If that year had two plates, you must display both front and back plates. You get little tag for rear plate to show you are legal.

The guy that i got my 54 olds 88 from, gave me a set of 1954 Ohio plates. Before he died, he had ohio plates back to around 1918.

It is totally legal and true you only need to re-register every 50 years or so, and it is only about $15 or $20 bucks to get the historical plates. The downside is you are supposed to only use the car for special events, parades, car shows etc.. I've never had a problem. I always figured if I ever got stopped I could say I was on the way to a car show somewhere.
