Hi, I am working on a 54 chevy truck 235 6 cyl 4 speed. I am connecting the torque tube drive shaft to the rear of the transmission. I have the knuckled u joint piece that connects the two together. My question is this. the knuckled u joint piece looks to just slide over the driveshaft inside the torque tube. BUT on the trans side the knuckled u joint piece looks to have threads on the outside of it which makes me think im missing something. the knuckled u joint piece slides right into the drive gear on the back of the trans, but does something screw these two pieces together? or does the knuckled u joint piece just float inside the closed gasket ed sphere that encases the knuckled u joint piece. sorry for the non technical jargin, I couldnt find names on these pieces to talk more intelligently.
You're looking at the speedo drive gear. Split the joint. The yoke is bolted to the mainshaft in the trans w/ a 3/8'' SAE bolt & lock washer. You know about adjusting the pre-load on the ball, right ?
I "think" I understand the pre-load on the ball now after reading a little. I am still having issues figuring out where all the gaskets go. the large ones are obvious, but the smaller one w/ a taper on one end eludes me
Sorry, I meant ..... are you working with GM Service manual for a '54 truck ? LOOK at pages 7-11 and 7-12, under universal joint ball adjustment, see if that info will ***ist you. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1954truck/54ctsm0711.html
