It also needed a new exhaust gasket and of course one of the bolts broke off so that turned into a tad bit more work

I've always wanted one of those coupes. Looks like you have a great base car to work with.

What a great car. Grew up in the back seat of one of those in the late 50's.

I always thought the 54 tail lights looked 100 times better then the 53 lights.

Good choice on changing the tail lights, 54 tail lights look sooooo much better then 53's.

X10 on the 54 tail lights, 53 was last year for the coupe. I have always wanted one. Never seen one with skirts. I like it.

  22. I love those cars, and like what you are doing getting your son involved. That is how I turned my son into a gearhead.
Below, is a picture of my buddy and I swapping a 283 (punched out 265), into his 53 Chev coupe. We put 54 front fenders and hood on the 53, as well as 54 taillights. I don't think I have a picture of the hood, but we removed the trim line joining the two halves of the hood, and leaded it into a mild peak. It looked really sharp, but few people noticed it.
This was how we did all our swaps back in 1959.
