Took my 51 to bare metal with glass beads. Roughed it up to a matte finish. Sanding didn't seem to shine it up. Grinder with cup wire wheel did good but what can I do to make it a bit shinier before I clear it. Thanks Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I would sand it with 320 then 400 and finish with 600 by hand. Sand front to back to give it a uniform grain to the metal. You don't want it too smooth and shiny tho, otherwise the clear will peel off. Or you could buy one of these from Eastwood. I hit this spot on my car with it. You can get a pretty good shine by just using a DA with finer and finer paper. That's how this was done. However, if I was you, I would just scotchbrite it. I also wouldn't clear it. The clear won't last, and it'll last an even shorter time the more you shine it up. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It has no way to adhere to the surface. There is no grit on the metal for mechanical adhesion if polished and clears are not designed with any properties to bite into metal on their own.
You stay after it and work your ass off to keep the rust away. Behind laying frame and having your rig look broken, way over size wheels and skinny little tires (one reason I love the HAMB is they are verboten here) running in bare metal for a length of time beyond those one or two outings to show off your metal work is the silliest fad to come down the pike.
We put Gibbs on all the bare metal cars in the shop till they are ready to go to paint. And if they do get any surface rust, normally where something has been handled, we use metal prep and scotchbrite, the re-apply Gibbs. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
